Type of Test:
Patient instructions: To be performed on day 3 of the cycle. This test cannot be performed if you are taking hormonal contraceptives as the results will not be valid.
What does it look at:
This may be requested to assess the capacity of your ovaries to provide eggs that are capable of fertilisation, resulting in a healthy and successful pregnancy. The higher your maternal age, the less the number of eggs available for fertilisation.
FSH and oestradiol – this allows you to assess if there is any ovarian failure.
Antimullerian hormone - low levels suggest that you may respond less well to ovarian stimulation by your IVF specialist and an alternative protocol may be required. High levels suggest that you may have an excessive response to ovarian stimulation and again, an alternative protocol may be needed.
Day 3 inhibin B test– This protein produced by your ovaries blocks FSH (which is needed to help your ovarian follicles develop). Inhibin B decreases with age and indicates your egg quality and quantity. Low levels are associated with reduced ovulation, reduced success with IVF, lower pregnancy rates and an increased risk of miscarriage.
