The private testicular ultrasound will examine the testes and scrotum. The scrotum or testicular sack contains the testes and the epididymi. It is very common for pain or lumps to developed within the scrotal sac. In most cases these lumps are benign and ultrasound is being used to confirm what the lump is. Other possible abnormalities within the scrotal sac are an absent or undescended testicle, inflammation, testicular torsion (twisted testis), fluid collection, enlarged blood vessels (varicoceles) or a mass (lump or a tumour), infertility. Our clients choose our private ultrasound clinic for their scan, as in most cases after they have seen their GP who recommended an NHS scan, they don’t want to wait up to 6+ weeks to be given an inflexible appointment.

What are the common causes of testicular lumps?

It is recommended to regularly check the testis for any lumps or for anything that doesn't feel right.

The testis is the ovoid structure within the scrotal sack. Within the scrotum, there is also the head, tail and body of the epididymis.

The epididymis is full of small tubules where the sperm matures. These tubules sometimes get blocked and expand resulting on what is called epididymal cyst.

Epididymal cysts are harmless and they are very common.

Sometimes the tubules leak and sperm escape within the scrotal sac resulting sometimes in discomfort.

Hydrocoele is fluid around the testis.

Infections are also common in the testis resulting in an inflamed epididymis that can also feel like a lump.

It is also possible for cancer to be developed inside the testis and it is therefore very important if you find any lumps to have them checked as soon as possible with ultrasound.

What is a difference between sonography and ultrasound?

The word Sonography is made up of sono and graphy. Sono comes from the Latin Sonos which means sound and graphy from the Greek word grafei which means writing. So writing [drawing] images using sound and in our case ultrasound. Today it is more common to hear the expression of medical ultrasound than medical sonography in the UK.

What is an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound imaging is a medical diagnostic technique where sound waves are being used to image various parts of the body.
Other terms for ultrasound imaging that are being used are sonograms, US and sonography.
Ultrasound is widely used these days as it is painless and safe for adults, children and foetuses. There are no side effects such as the ones associated with ionising radiation produced by CT and plain x-rays.
During the ultrasound scan, the sonographer rests a small probe over the skin. This probe produces sound waves i.e. pulsations that travel through your skin and inside your body. Part of the sound waves are being reflected back to the transducer and the computer analyses the returning echoes and produces the image on the screen. Medical ultrasonography uses the same principle as the sonar that the navy uses to detect submarines.
Ultrasound is being used to image mostly solid soft organs such as liver, kidneys, uterus and ovaries, muscles and blood vessels and babies in the womb. It has, however, limited value in organs such lungs, bone, stomach and bowel/colon.
Ultrasound images are black and white but colour Doppler is being used to evaluate organ blood flow and blood vessels and this is what the red and blue colours on the screen are.
