How to Prepare for Your Hernia Scan

A hernia ultrasound requires no special preparation. You do not need to fast, follow a special diet, or arrive with a full bladder. Simply wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the groin and abdomen.

The scan uses a dynamic technique: the sonographer will ask you to cough or bear down (the Valsalva manoeuvre) during the examination. This increases intra-abdominal pressure and reveals hernias that may retract and remain hidden when you are lying flat at rest. Wearing clothing that can be easily adjusted will help the examination proceed smoothly.

What to Wear

  • Loose trousers or shorts that can be lowered to the groin
  • A top that can be raised to expose the abdomen
  • Avoid tight belts or clothing with metal fastenings

What to Bring

  • Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • Insurance authorisation code (if applicable)
  • Any previous scan reports or referral letters
  • A list of current medications if relevant

Scan Includes

  • Inguinal canal — direct and indirect hernias
  • Femoral canal — femoral hernia assessment
  • Umbilical & epigastric regions
  • Dynamic Valsalva manoeuvre for occult hernias
  • Same-day written report with annotated images
  • Immediate verbal feedback from your sonographer

Hernia Ultrasound-Scan — £149

29 Weymouth Street, Marylebone, London

hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall.  In many cases, hernias cause no symptoms or very few symptoms. You may notice a swelling or lump in your tummy (abdomen) or groin that can often be pushed back in or will disappear when you lie down. Coughing or straining may make the lump to re-appear.

Types of hernias:

Hernias can occur throughout the body, but most often develop in the areas of your body between your chest and hips.
