About Robert Mast
Robert Mast is a specialist Advanced Practice Physiotherapist (APP) with more than 30 years of experience in managing complex musculoskeletal conditions. He holds a BSc in Physiotherapy from the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA), a Postgraduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Sonography from Canterbury Christ Church University, and independent prescriber rights gained through London South Bank University. He is registered with the HCPC and is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (MCSP).
Rob trained and qualified as a physiotherapist at the HvA in Amsterdam in 1993. From the outset, his clinical focus was musculoskeletal practice — the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of MSK conditions from acute soft tissue injuries to complex chronic presentations. He moved to the United Kingdom and has been working as an Extended Scope Physiotherapist in NHS primary care since 2004, where he holds an expert clinician post providing both clinical diagnosis and point-of-care diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Rob began using diagnostic ultrasound in 2008, recognising early on that imaging-guided assessment and injection therapy would significantly improve diagnostic accuracy and procedural safety. He obtained his Postgraduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Sonography through Canterbury Christ Church University in 2010 — making him one of a small number of physiotherapists in the UK to hold a formal postgraduate qualification in MSK ultrasound. Since then, he has performed thousands of ultrasound-guided procedures for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including cortisone injections, hyaluronic acid injections, joint aspirations, and barbotage.
In addition to his NHS work, Rob holds a one-day-per-week post in a Radiology department, where he performs diagnostic ultrasound scans and carries out ultrasound-guided injection procedures. This dual clinical environment — primary care physiotherapy and radiology — gives him an unusually broad perspective on MSK pathology and imaging-guided intervention.
Rob is also the founder of Sonoscope Ltd, a One-Stop Ultrasound-Guided Injection Clinic that delivers fast access to expert MSK assessment, diagnostic ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided injection all within a single appointment. At Sonoworld, he brings this same integrated approach to private patients, combining clinical physiotherapy assessment with real-time diagnostic ultrasound and, where appropriate, immediate interventional treatment.
His commitment to education is a defining feature of his career. Since 2013, Rob has been a core member of the teaching faculty at The Ultrasound Site, one of the UK's leading providers of MSK ultrasound training for allied health professionals and medical practitioners. He is an honorary senior lecturer at Brunel University, where he and the Ultrasound Site team developed a recognised Postgraduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. He is also a visiting lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University on the MSK Ultrasound module, and a former visiting lecturer at London South Bank University. He contributes regularly to the MSK ultrasound knowledge base through case studies, video clips, and educational content published via The Ultrasound Site and his own YouTube channel.
