Bilateral carotid and vertebral artery duplex ultrasound-scan with CIMT measurement and full stenosis grading. No preparation required.
A carotid artery duplex ultrasound-scan requires absolutely no preparation. There is nothing to do, change, or avoid before your appointment.
Eat and drink normally before your appointment. No dietary restrictions of any kind.
Take all medications as normal, including antihypertensives, statins, and anticoagulants.
Wear a top with a low or open neckline, or a loose collar. Remove necklaces before arriving.
If you have had a previous carotid scan or vascular imaging, bring the report for comparison.
From arrival to written report, here is exactly what happens at your Sonoworld carotid artery scan appointment.
The clinic is a 3-minute walk from Regent's Park tube station. Reception will greet you and ask you to complete a short clinical history form covering cardiovascular risk factors and any symptoms.
Your HCPC-registered sonographer reviews your history and discusses the reason for your scan. This ensures the examination protocol is tailored to your specific clinical question.
You lie comfortably on the examination couch with your neck slightly extended. Both carotid arteries and both vertebral arteries are assessed using B-mode imaging, colour Doppler, and spectral waveform analysis. CIMT is measured at the common carotid artery. The scan is entirely painless.
Before you leave, your sonographer explains the findings in plain language — what was seen, what it means clinically, and what the recommended next steps are. You will not leave without a clear understanding of your results.
A comprehensive written report with annotated images, CIMT measurements, stenosis grading, plaque characterisation, and clinical summary is emailed to you within 24 hours. The report is formatted for direct onward referral to your GP, cardiologist, or neurologist.
"Booked online at 9pm, had an appointment the following morning. The sonographer was thorough and explained everything clearly. Report arrived the next day — exactly what my cardiologist needed."
Robert A. — Carotid Artery Scan
"I had a TIA and couldn't wait for an NHS appointment. Sonoworld saw me the same day. The scan found a 65% stenosis — I was referred to a vascular surgeon within 48 hours. Outstanding service."
Margaret S. — Post-TIA Assessment
"Very professional clinic. No waiting, no fuss. The CIMT measurement was something my NHS GP had never offered. The report was detailed and my GP was very impressed with the quality."
