What to Expect

Your Appointment — Step by Step

From arrival to written report, here is exactly what happens at your Sonoworld carotid artery scan appointment.

1

Arrive at 29 Weymouth Street

The clinic is a 3-minute walk from Regent's Park tube station. Reception will greet you and ask you to complete a short clinical history form covering cardiovascular risk factors and any symptoms.

2

Clinical History with Your Sonographer

Your HCPC-registered sonographer reviews your history and discusses the reason for your scan. This ensures the examination protocol is tailored to your specific clinical question.

3

The Scan — 20 to 30 Minutes

You lie comfortably on the examination couch with your neck slightly extended. Both carotid arteries and both vertebral arteries are assessed using B-mode imaging, colour Doppler, and spectral waveform analysis. CIMT is measured at the common carotid artery. The scan is entirely painless.

4

Immediate Verbal Feedback

Before you leave, your sonographer explains the findings in plain language — what was seen, what it means clinically, and what the recommended next steps are. You will not leave without a clear understanding of your results.

5

Written Report Within 24 Hours

A comprehensive written report with annotated images, CIMT measurements, stenosis grading, plaque characterisation, and clinical summary is emailed to you within 24 hours. The report is formatted for direct onward referral to your GP, cardiologist, or neurologist.

Booking Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I get an appointment?
Same-day and next-day appointments are usually available at Sonoworld in Marylebone. You can book online 24 hours a day or call 020 3633 4902 during clinic hours (Monday to Friday 08:00–20:00, Saturday 09:00–17:00).
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is required. You can book directly online or by telephone. If your GP has recommended the scan, bring any relevant clinical notes — this helps the sonographer tailor the examination protocol, but is not a prerequisite for booking.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Bring photo ID, any previous carotid scan or vascular imaging reports, a list of current medications, and your insurance details if claiming through private medical insurance. A GP referral letter is helpful but not required.
Can I claim through private medical insurance?
Many private health insurance policies cover diagnostic ultrasound. Contact your insurer before booking to confirm coverage and obtain a pre-authorisation number. Sonoworld provides a VAT receipt and clinical report in the format required by most insurers.
What is the cancellation policy?
Appointments can be rescheduled or cancelled free of charge with at least 24 hours' notice. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice may incur a fee. Please call 020 3633 4902 or email info@sonoworld.co.uk to reschedule.
How long does the appointment take?
The carotid artery duplex ultrasound-scan takes 20–30 minutes. Please allow 45 minutes in total to include registration, clinical history, the scan, and verbal feedback. You can resume all normal activities immediately after the appointment, including driving.
When will I receive my written report?
Verbal feedback is given immediately after the scan. The written report with annotated images, CIMT measurements, stenosis grading, and clinical summary is delivered by email within 24 hours of your appointment.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. You are welcome to bring a partner, family member, or friend. They can be present in the examination room during the scan and the verbal feedback discussion.
