Private Elbow Ultrasound Scan

The Elbow Ultrasound Scan

The elbow joint is a complex joint composed of three communicating joints that share a common synovial membrane. Ultrasound scans are frequently requested for the examination of patients with elbow pain, which is generally caused by overuse syndromes, trauma, inflammatory diseases, or neuropathies. Any activity that involves excessive flexion-extension movements of the elbow can result in undue stress on the ligaments, tendons, and muscles that stabilize the joint.

Nerve entrapment as in Radial Tunnel Syndrome, carpal tunnel or median nerve entrapment neuropathy and cubital tunnel or ulnar nerve entrapment neuropathy can also occur. These types of injuries happen gradually over time and can aggravate existing conditions such as Tendonitis. Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow are examples of common overuse injuries.

The joint is studied in both the flexed and extended positions.

About the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound Scan

Pain and reduced movement are common problems associated with all our joints. Ultrasound is regularly employed to examine the musculoskeletal system (MSK) as it provides much-needed information about the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue in the body.

An ultrasound scan will help in the diagnosis of tendon tears, such as tears of the rotator cuff in the shoulder or Achilles tendon in the ankle, abnormalities of the muscles, such as tears and soft-tissue masses, bleeding or other fluid collections within the muscles or damage to the major joints for common problems such as arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, fluid in the joints, carpal tunnel syndrome etc..
