What Is the Well Man Scan?

A Comprehensive Men’s Health Ultrasound-Scan

The Well Man ultrasound-scan is a private health screening designed specifically for men. It combines four separate ultrasound examinations into a single 45-minute appointment, giving a thorough assessment of the abdominal organs, urinary tract, prostate, abdominal aorta, and testes — all in one visit.

Unlike a standard abdominal scan, the Well Man scan extends assessment to the male reproductive system and the aorta. This makes it a practical choice for men who want a broad picture of their internal health without needing multiple appointments or a GP referral.

The scan uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of organ structure, size, and vascularity. Colour Doppler is applied to the testicular vessels to assess blood flow. No radiation is involved. The examination is painless and performed by an HCPC-registered consultant sonographer.

What Each Scan Area Detects

The table below shows the structures assessed in each of the four component scans and the conditions that ultrasound imaging can identify in each area.

Scan Area Structures Assessed Conditions Detected
Full Abdomen Liver, gallbladder, biliary ducts, pancreas, spleen Fatty liver (NAFLD), liver cysts, haemangiomas, gallstones, biliary obstruction, pancreatitis, splenomegaly, focal lesions
Kidneys & Bladder Bilateral kidneys, ureters, bladder wall Kidney stones, hydronephrosis, renal cysts, chronic kidney disease, bladder wall thickening, residual urine volume
Prostate Prostate gland (transabdominal), seminal vesicles Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate enlargement, abnormal echogenicity, post-void residual urine
Abdominal Aorta Infrarenal aorta, iliac vessels Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), aortic dilatation, iliac artery disease
Testes Bilateral testes, epididymis, scrotal sac Testicular lumps, epididymo-orchitis, varicocele, hydrocele, microlithiasis, torsion assessment, testicular cysts

Note on prostate assessment

The prostate is assessed transabdominally (through the lower abdomen) as part of the urinary tract scan. This provides a reliable measurement of prostate volume and identifies significant enlargement or abnormal texture. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is a separate procedure and is not included in the Well Man scan.

Indications

Reasons to Have a Well Man Ultrasound-Scan

The Well Man scan suits men who want a proactive health check, as well as those with specific symptoms. You do not need to be unwell to book — many patients attend for routine screening with no symptoms at all.

Abdominal & Digestive Symptoms

  • Persistent abdominal pain or bloating
  • Abnormal liver function tests (LFTs)
  • Jaundice or yellowing of the skin
  • Known or suspected fatty liver (NAFLD)
  • Follow-up of gallstones, cysts, or polyps

Urinary & Prostate Symptoms

  • Urinary frequency, urgency, or weak flow
  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • Loin or kidney pain
  • Suspected enlarged prostate or BPH
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Abnormal kidney function tests

Testicular Symptoms

  • Testicular lump or swelling
  • Testicular pain or ache
  • Scrotal heaviness or discomfort
  • Known or suspected varicocele
  • History of testicular infection
  • Blood in the semen (haematospermia)

Seek urgent assessment if you have:

  • Sudden severe testicular pain (possible torsion — attend A&E immediately)
  • Rapidly expanding abdominal mass or pulsatile abdominal swelling
  • Severe abdominal pain with collapse or dizziness

Routine Screening Indications

  • Men aged 40+ wanting a proactive health check
  • Family history of AAA, kidney disease, or liver conditions
  • Metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, or hypertension
  • Annual health review alongside blood tests
The Procedure

What Happens During the Well Man Scan

The examination follows a systematic sequence, working through all four scan areas in a single appointment. Here is what to expect from start to finish.

History & consent

Your consultant sonographer reviews your medical history, confirms your preparation, explains the procedure, and obtains your consent. This takes approximately 5 minutes.

Abdominal scan

You lie on your back. Warm gel is applied to the abdomen and the sonographer scans the liver, gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas, and spleen using a curvilinear probe. This takes approximately 10–12 minutes.

Urinary tract & prostate

The kidneys are assessed from the flanks and posteriorly. The bladder and prostate are imaged transabdominally with a full bladder. Bladder volume and post-void residual may be measured. This takes approximately 10 minutes.

Aorta & testes

The abdominal aorta is measured for aneurysm screening. The testicular scan follows, using a high-frequency linear probe with colour Doppler to assess both testes, the epididymis, and scrotal vascularity. This takes approximately 10 minutes.

Verbal feedback & report

Immediate verbal feedback is provided at the end of the scan. A comprehensive written report with annotated images is sent digitally the same day, formatted for sharing with your GP or specialist.

About the Ultrasound Technology

The Well Man scan uses a high-resolution ultrasound system with both curvilinear and linear probes. Curvilinear probes provide the broad field of view needed for abdominal organs. Linear probes deliver the fine resolution required for testicular assessment.

Colour Doppler imaging is applied to the testicular vessels to assess blood flow and identify conditions such as varicocele or torsion. No radiation is used. The examination is entirely painless.

Before Your Appointment

How to Prepare for the Well Man Scan

Fasting & bladder preparation required

  • Fast for at least 4 hours before your appointment. Water is permitted and encouraged.
  • Drink 1 litre (2 pints) of water in the hour before your appointment to achieve a full bladder.
  • Do not empty your bladder in the hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid fizzy drinks on the morning of the scan as carbonated beverages increase bowel gas and reduce image quality.

What to Wear

  • Loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen and groin
  • A top that can be raised to expose the full abdomen
  • Loose trousers or shorts that can be lowered to the groin for the testicular scan
  • Avoid tight belts or clothing with metal fastenings

What to Bring

  • Insurance authorisation code (if applicable)
  • Any previous scan reports, blood test results, or GP letters
  • A list of current medications if relevant

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Well Man scan include?
The Well Man ultrasound-scan combines four examinations in one appointment: a full abdominal scan (liver, gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas, spleen), a urinary tract and prostate scan (kidneys, bladder, prostate), an abdominal aorta scan for AAA screening, and a testicular scan with colour Doppler (testes, epididymis, scrotal sac). All four areas are assessed in approximately 45 minutes and a same-day written report is included.
Do I need to fast before the scan?
Yes. You must fast for at least 4 hours before your appointment. Water is permitted and encouraged. You also need to drink 1 litre (2 pints) of water in the hour before the scan to achieve a full bladder, and you must not empty your bladder before arriving at the clinic. Fasting significantly improves image quality for the abdominal components, particularly the gallbladder and pancreas.
How is the Well Man scan different from the Men’s Full Body scan?
The Well Man scan covers four areas: abdomen, urinary tract and prostate, abdominal aorta, and testes. The Men’s Full Body scan extends this to include the thyroid and neck, and a carotid duplex with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) measurement for cardiovascular risk assessment. The Men’s Full Body scan takes approximately 60 minutes and costs £785. The Well Man scan is the right choice for most men wanting a comprehensive abdominal and urological check.
Do I need a GP referral?
No GP referral is needed. You can book directly online or by telephone. The scan is available to any adult male. A written report is provided that you can share with your GP or specialist if you wish.
When will I receive my report?
Your written report with annotated images is sent digitally the same day as your appointment. Immediate verbal feedback is provided at the end of the scan. The report is formatted for sharing with your GP or specialist and includes findings, measurements, and recommendations for each of the four areas assessed.
Can the scan detect prostate cancer?
The transabdominal prostate assessment measures prostate volume and identifies significant enlargement or abnormal echogenicity consistent with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Ultrasound alone cannot reliably diagnose prostate cancer; PSA blood testing and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) with biopsy are required for that purpose. If the scan identifies abnormal findings, the report will recommend appropriate further investigation.
Can I use private medical insurance?
Yes. We accept AXA, Healix, WPA, and most major private medical insurers. Please call us before booking online so we can process your authorisation code correctly. Self-pay patients are always welcome.
