A comprehensive guide to what a pelvic ultrasound is and why it's an essential tool for women's health.
A pelvic ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed, real-time images of the organs in your pelvis. It is a fundamental tool in gynaecology, providing crucial information about your reproductive and urinary systems without the use of radiation. At Sonoworld, our specialists use this technology to examine the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and bladder, helping to diagnose conditions, investigate symptoms, and guide treatment with exceptional clarity.Understanding the difference between these two ultrasound methods helps you know what to expect.
Depending on your specific symptoms and clinical needs, your specialist may recommend one or both types of pelvic ultrasound. A transabdominal (across the abdomen) ultrasound is performed by moving a probe over your lower belly, providing a wide, comprehensive overview of the entire pelvic region. A transvaginal (through the vagina) ultrasound involves placing a small, specially designed probe into the vagina, providing much more detailed and clearer images of the uterus, endometrium (uterine lining), and ovaries as the probe is closer to these structures.
Often, a transabdominal scan is performed first to get a general view, followed by a transvaginal scan for a more detailed assessment.
| Aspect | Transabdominal | Transvaginal |
|---|---|---|
| Procedure | Probe moved over lower abdomen | Small probe inserted into vagina |
| Best For Viewing | Overall pelvic anatomy, large masses | Detailed uterus, endometrium, ovaries |
| Preparation | Full bladder required | Empty bladder recommended |
| When It's Used | Initial screening, general assessment | Detailed evaluation, early pregnancy |
| Comfort Level | Non-invasive, very comfortable | Minimally invasive, generally comfortable |
A pelvic ultrasound is a vital diagnostic tool for investigating a wide range of women's health concerns.
To identify the source of acute or chronic pelvic pain and guide appropriate treatment.
Including heavy periods (menorrhagia), bleeding between periods, or post-menopausal bleeding.
To detect and measure non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus.
To assess the size and characteristics of cysts on the ovaries.
To evaluate the uterus and ovaries, and for follicle tracking during fertility treatment.
To confirm an intrauterine device (IUD) is correctly positioned.
We are committed to ensuring your experience is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
For a transabdominal scan, you will need a full bladder. We recommend drinking one litre of water one hour before your appointment. For a transvaginal scan, no preparation is needed, and you will be asked to empty your bladder just before the scan for comfort.
You will lie comfortably on your back while our specialist applies a clear gel to your lower abdomen and moves a probe gently over the skin. The gel helps ensure good contact for the clearest images.
For this internal scan, you will be given privacy to undress from the waist down and will be covered with a sheet. A small, sterile probe, not much wider than a finger, is gently inserted into the vagina. Our specialists are highly experienced and will ensure the procedure is performed with the utmost sensitivity and respect for your comfort.
The radiologist will discuss the initial findings with you. A comprehensive report will be securely sent to you and your referring doctor, often on the same day.
