You might choose to book a private pelvic ultrasound in London instead of waiting 6+ weeks for an inconvenient scan appointment from your local hospital if you are experiencing gynaecological symptoms and you want to skip the hospital or you just want to check if everything is OK with your uterus, endometrium and ovaries. Gynaecological problems such as heavy bleeding, painful periods, dyspareunia (pain during intercourse) are very common and affect all age groups. The pelvic scan is the primary investigation to identify the cause of these symptoms.
The pelvic ultrasound scan may be performed in the investigation of a number of problems including:
This scan can be performed through the abdomen (transabdominal) or internally through the vagina (transvaginal). Both approaches are being used to image the uterus and the ovaries for any abnormality. They both give useful information that can be combined for the best diagnostic outcome. Sometimes the transabdominal scan image quality is so good that transvaginal scan will not offer any additional benefits in the diagnosis.
This pelvic ultrasound scan is being performed trans-abdominally and on occasions, a transvaginal ultrasound scan might be required in order to further evaluate the pelvic organs.
You will need a full bladder, so please drink 2 pints of water one hour before your scan.
The pelvic ultrasound scan will examine and evaluate your gynaecological organs for any abnormality such as:
Ovarian cysts
Ovarian Tumours
Polycystic ovaries
Fibroids
Polyps
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Endometriosis
Detect and locate an IUCD or coil if you have one implanted
Assess the effect of HRT
Upon your arrival at the clinic, our sonographer will explain the ultrasound scan procedure and will ask you to lie on your back on the couch. You will be asked to lower a bit your trousers/skirt and your underwear to be able to access your pelvic area. A small amount of ultrasonic gel will be placed on your skin. The transducer will be moved back and forth across your lower abdomen to image the area of interest.
If there is a need to have a transvaginal scan, you will be asked to empty your bladder and remove your trousers/skirt and your underwear. You will be asked to lie on your back on the couch and a towel will be provided to cover yourself. A special lubricated probe will be inserted into the vagina and will be moved to different directions to obtain the best images.
At the end of the examination, we will discuss the findings with you and we will provide you with a report for your medical records.
Yes. Having your period will not affect the diagnostic accuracy of the test. If you, however, prefer you can re-schedule for when your period has finished
You can now combine your ultrasound with one of our screening tests to get the full picture of your health. All our tests are done at the internationally renowned The Doctor’s Laboratory. The Doctor’s laboratory works with NHS trusts and major UK private hospitals.
You can find more information about our add-on screening blood test here.
Please add the screening test when you book your ultrasound scan from our add-on packages.
