How to Prepare for Your Carotid Ultrasound-Scan

A carotid ultrasound-scan requires no preparation whatsoever. You do not need to fast, avoid medications, or make any dietary changes. Simply wear clothing that allows easy access to the neck area.

  • Avoid high-neck jumpers, polo necks, or scarves on the day
  • Remove any necklaces or neck jewellery before the scan

  • Insurance authorisation code (if applicable)
  • Any previous scan reports, blood test results, or GP letters
  • A list of current medications (especially antihypertensives or statins)
  • Arrive 5 minutes early to complete a brief patient history form

After You Book

What Happens Next

Here is exactly what to expect from the moment you confirm your booking to receiving your report.

1

Instant Confirmation

You receive an email confirmation immediately after booking, including your appointment time, clinic address, and preparation instructions.

2

Arrive at the Clinic

Please arrive 5 minutes early at 29 Weymouth Street, London W1G 8GR. Our reception team will check you in and ask you to complete a short patient history form.

3

History & Consent

Your sonographer will take a brief clinical history, explain the examination, and answer any questions you have before the scan begins.

4

The Examination

You lie comfortably on the examination couch. The sonographer applies warm gel to the neck and uses a linear probe to assess both carotid arteries and vertebral arteries using greyscale and colour Doppler. The scan takes approximately 20 minutes.

5

Report & Next Steps

Verbal feedback is given immediately. Your written report — including velocity measurements, stenosis grading, and IMT values — is emailed to you the same day. If significant findings are identified, your sonographer will advise on appropriate next steps before you leave.

Common Questions

Booking FAQs

Can I cancel or rearrange my appointment?

Yes. Please give at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or rearrange without charge. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice may incur a cancellation fee. To rearrange, call 020 3633 4902 or email the clinic directly.

Do I need a GP referral to book?

No referral is needed for a self-pay booking. If your insurer requires a GP referral, please obtain this before your appointment and bring it with you. Insurance authorisation codes should be provided at the time of booking.

Will my report be sent to my GP?

Your report is sent directly to you. If you would like a copy forwarded to your GP or specialist, please provide their contact details at reception on the day of your appointment. We can send reports by secure email to any UK-registered clinician.

Is the booking payment taken online or at the clinic?

Payment can be made online at the time of booking or at the clinic on the day. We accept all major credit and debit cards. Insurance-funded patients should bring their authorisation code — no upfront payment is required in most cases.

How quickly will I receive my written report?

Your written report is issued the same day and sent to you by email. It includes vessel-by-vessel velocity measurements, stenosis grading, IMT values, and a clinical summary. If you need the report urgently, please inform reception on arrival.

What if the scan reveals something that needs urgent attention?

If the sonographer identifies a finding that requires urgent clinical review — such as severe stenosis (≥70%) or occlusion — they will advise you before you leave the clinic and recommend immediate referral to your GP or a vascular surgeon. The written report will clearly flag any urgent findings.
