A Well Woman scan is a proactive health check that uses high-resolution ultrasound to examine four distinct areas of the body in a single appointment. Rather than investigating a specific symptom, it gives you a detailed picture of your internal health — covering the organs most likely to develop conditions that go undetected until they become more complex.
The scan evaluates the uterus, endometrium, and ovaries; the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen; both kidneys and the bladder; and the abdominal aorta. Each area is assessed by a HCPC-registered consultant sonographer using a GE LOGIQ E10 system — the same platform used in leading NHS teaching hospitals.
You receive a written report with annotated images on the same day. The report is accepted by GPs, consultants, and private medical insurers, and can be used to support onward referral if any findings require further investigation.
Each component addresses a different anatomical region, allowing your sonographer to build a complete picture of your internal health.
The uterus is measured and the endometrium assessed for thickness and regularity. Both ovaries are examined for follicular activity, cysts, and morphological features consistent with PCOS. The pelvic cavity is checked for free fluid. Fibroids, polyps, and adenomyosis can all be identified at this stage.
The liver is assessed for fatty infiltration, lesions, and cirrhotic change. The gallbladder is examined for gallstones and wall thickening. The pancreas and spleen are evaluated for structural abnormalities. This component requires a 4-hour fast to ensure optimal image quality.
Both kidneys are examined for stones, cysts, hydronephrosis, and structural changes. The bladder is assessed for wall thickening, stones, and post-void residual volume. A full bladder is required for this component, which is why preparation combines fasting with adequate hydration.
The abdominal aorta is measured to screen for aneurysmal dilatation. An aortic diameter above 3 cm warrants surveillance; above 5.5 cm is considered a surgical threshold. Particularly relevant for women over 50 with cardiovascular risk factors.
Many women book a Well Woman scan because they have noticed a change they cannot explain. Others book as a proactive annual health check — particularly if they have a family history of ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or liver disease. Both are valid reasons.
You do not need symptoms to benefit from a Well Woman scan. Many findings — including early-stage PCOS, small fibroids, and fatty liver — are asymptomatic. Identifying them early gives you and your clinician more options, and more time.
From booking to receiving your report, the process is straightforward. Most patients are in and out within 45 minutes.
Do not eat for at least 4 hours before your appointment. This reduces bowel gas and ensures the gallbladder is fully distended. You may drink water.
A full bladder is required for clear visualisation of the uterus and ovaries. Drink 1 litre of still water approximately 1 hour before and do not urinate beforehand.
The Well Woman scan is priced at £500 for the complete package. There are no hidden fees, no separate report charges, and no additional costs for images. Everything is included in the single price.
A pelvic scan focuses exclusively on the uterus, endometrium, and ovaries. The Well Woman scan includes the pelvic scan as one of four components — the others being abdominal, urinary tract, and aortic assessment. If you have a specific pelvic concern, a standalone pelvic scan at £235 may be more appropriate. If you want a comprehensive health check, the Well Woman scan at £500 provides significantly broader coverage.
No. You can self-refer and book directly online or by calling 020 3633 4902. If the scan identifies findings that require follow-up, we provide a detailed written report that you can share with your GP or a specialist of your choice.
Fast for a minimum of 4 hours before your appointment — no food, no milk, no fizzy drinks. You may drink water. Drink 1 litre of still water approximately 1 hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder before the scan begins.
The scan itself takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Your sonographer will talk you through the findings as they go. Allow up to an hour for the full appointment, including a brief consultation before the scan and verbal feedback afterwards.
Your written report and high-resolution images are provided on the same day as your appointment — usually within a few hours. The report is sent digitally and can be shared directly with your GP or specialist.
