Your First Look at Baby ❤️

A dating scan is often the first time you'll see your baby on screen and hear their tiny heartbeat. It's one of the most magical, reassuring, and emotional moments of your pregnancy journey.

You've just discovered you're pregnant. Excitement, joy, perhaps some anxiety — it's all completely normal. A dating scan gives you the reassurance you need in those precious early weeks.

Between 8-14 weeks of pregnancy, we can accurately measure your baby using the crown-rump length (CRL) technique. This gives you:

  • Your accurate due date (EDD) — essential for planning ahead
  • Confirmation that baby is developing normally — size, heartbeat, position
  • How many babies you're carrying — single or multiple pregnancy
  • Visual confirmation of pregnancy — seeing is believing!

Why Have a Dating Scan?

Many women choose a private dating scan because:

Peace of Mind & Reassurance

  • 💗 See your baby's heartbeat — the most reassuring sign of a healthy pregnancy
  • 📏 Confirm baby is growing well — measurements compared to expected development
  • Early reassurance — before your NHS 12-week scan
  • 👶 Confirm number of babies — twins, triplets surprise!
  • 📅 Accurate due date — especially important if you have irregular cycles
  • 🩺 Detect potential issues early — ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, molar pregnancy
  • 📸 First photos of your baby — precious keepsakes to treasure

You don't have to wait. While the NHS offers a 12-week scan, many expectant mothers choose a private dating scan earlier for reassurance, especially after previous pregnancy loss, IVF, or fertility treatment.

Your Questions Answered

Common questions about dating scans in early pregnancy

When should I have a dating scan?

A dating scan is typically performed between 8-14 weeks of pregnancy. The ideal time is 10-13 weeks when crown-rump length (CRL) measurements are most accurate for calculating your due date.

If you're unsure of your dates, have irregular cycles, or want early reassurance, we recommend booking as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test (from around 6-7 weeks you can see a heartbeat).

Learn about early pregnancy scans (6-10 weeks) →

What does a dating scan show?

A dating scan shows:

  • 💗 Your baby's heartbeat — the most reassuring sign
  • 📅 Accurate due date (EDD) based on crown-rump length (CRL)
  • 👶 Baby's size & development — head, body, limbs forming
  • 🤰 Number of babies — single, twins, triplets
  • 📍 Pregnancy location — confirm baby is in the uterus (not ectopic)
  • ✅ Gestational sac & yolk sac — early pregnancy structures

You'll receive printed photos of your baby to take home.

How long does a dating scan take?

A dating scan appointment takes approximately 20-30 minutes. This includes:

  • Time for you to get comfortable on the couch
  • The ultrasound examination itself (10-15 minutes)
  • Measurements and due date calculation
  • Discussion of findings with our sonographer
  • Printing your photos
  • Opportunity to ask questions

Will I see my baby's heartbeat?

Yes! From around 6 weeks onwards you should see your baby's heartbeat. By 8-10 weeks the heartbeat is clearly visible on screen and can be measured.

Seeing and hearing your baby's heartbeat for the first time is one of the most reassuring and emotional moments of early pregnancy. Many expectant mothers describe it as the moment their pregnancy felt "real."

The normal fetal heart rate in early pregnancy is 110-170 beats per minute (bpm).

Do I need a full bladder?

A comfortably full bladder is recommended for transabdominal scans (through your tummy). This helps us get clearer images by pushing your uterus up out of your pelvis.

Preparation: Drink 3-4 glasses of water about 1 hour before your appointment. Don't empty your bladder before the scan.

If we can't get clear images abdominally (which can happen in very early pregnancy or if you have a tilted uterus), we may offer a transvaginal scan (internal ultrasound probe) which doesn't require a full bladder and often provides clearer images in early pregnancy.

Can my partner come with me?

Yes, absolutely! Your partner is very welcome to join you in the scan room. Sharing the experience of seeing your baby's heartbeat for the first time is a precious moment for both of you.

Many couples say this is when the pregnancy started to feel "real" for the partner too. We encourage you to bring your partner to share in the joy and reassurance.

What if something is wrong?

In most cases, dating scans show healthy, normally developing pregnancies. However, occasionally we detect:

  • Miscarriage — no heartbeat detected or pregnancy not developing
  • Ectopic pregnancy — pregnancy outside the uterus
  • Molar pregnancy — rare abnormal pregnancy
  • Delayed development — pregnancy earlier than expected

If we detect any concerns, our sonographer will explain clearly what we've seen and provide guidance on next steps. This may include:

  • Referral to your GP or midwife
  • Referral to Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) at hospital
  • Recommendation for follow-up scan in 7-14 days
  • Written report for your healthcare provider

We understand how difficult this can be. Our team will provide compassionate support and clear guidance throughout.

How much does a dating scan cost?

Our private dating scan costs £164. This includes:

  • Full ultrasound examination
  • Accurate due date calculation
  • Check of baby's development & heartbeat
  • Printed photos to take home
  • Time with our sonographer to discuss findings
  • Partner welcome

No hidden fees. £164 all-inclusive.

Can I have a dating scan on the NHS?

Yes, the NHS offers a 12-week dating scan (between 11-14 weeks) as part of routine antenatal care. This is free on the NHS.

However, many women choose a private dating scan earlier (8-11 weeks) because:

  • Earlier reassurance — don't have to wait until 12 weeks
  • Previous pregnancy loss — need reassurance sooner
  • IVF pregnancy — want to confirm implantation success early
  • Symptoms or bleeding — same-day private appointment for peace of mind
  • Partner can attend — NHS appointments often restrict visitors
  • Flexible timing — book at a time convenient for you

A private dating scan does not replace your NHS 12-week scan (which includes nuchal translucency screening). You should still attend your NHS appointment.
