About This Scan

Expert Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound provides real-time, high-resolution imaging of joints, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue. Unlike MRI, it allows dynamic assessment — structures can be examined in motion, both sides compared simultaneously, and the sonographer can provide immediate verbal feedback during the examination.

At Sonoworld, all MSK scans are performed by HCPC-registered consultant sonographers with specialist musculoskeletal expertise, using high-resolution GE ultrasound equipment. No GP referral is required, and a comprehensive written report is delivered within 24 hours.

Why patients choose Sonoworld
  • CQC-registered clinic — inspected and rated Good.
  • HCPC-registered consultant sonographers with specialist MSK expertise.
  • Dynamic real-time imaging — structures assessed in motion.
  • Instant verbal results and a written report within 24 hours.
  • No GP referral required — self-refer online or by phone.
  • Transparent all-inclusive pricing at £235.
What We Assess

What We Check During Your Scan

Our consultant sonographers perform a systematic assessment of all relevant structures. Here is what is included in your examination.

Trochanteric Bursa & Gluteal Tendons

Bursitis & gluteal tendinopathy

Assessment of the greater trochanteric bursa and gluteal tendons (gluteus medius and minimus) for bursitis, tendinopathy, and partial tears. Trochanteric bursitis is a common cause of lateral hip pain, particularly in middle-aged women.

Hip Flexors & Iliopsoas

Iliopsoas tendon & bursa

Evaluation of the iliopsoas tendon and bursa for tendinopathy, bursitis, and snapping hip syndrome. The iliopsoas is assessed dynamically for snapping during hip flexion and extension.

Hip Joint

Joint effusion & synovitis

Assessment of the anterior hip joint for effusion, synovitis, and loose bodies. Hip joint effusion can indicate inflammatory arthritis, infection, or avascular necrosis and may require aspiration.

Preparation

How to Prepare for Your Scan

No preparation is required for a hip ultrasound scan. Wear or bring loose shorts or underwear that allows access to the hip and groin area. You may be asked to move your hip during the scan for dynamic assessment of snapping hip syndrome.

On the day of your scan
  • Arrive 5 minutes before your appointment time.
  • Bring any previous scan reports, X-rays, or MRI results if available.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing for the area being scanned.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a hip ultrasound scan show?

A hip ultrasound scan provides detailed imaging of the trochanteric bursa, gluteal tendons, iliopsoas tendon and bursa, and hip joint. It can identify trochanteric bursitis, gluteal tendinopathy, iliopsoas bursitis, hip joint effusion, and snapping hip syndrome.

What is trochanteric bursitis?

Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the bursa overlying the greater trochanter of the femur, causing lateral hip pain that is often worse when lying on the affected side or climbing stairs. Ultrasound is the preferred investigation and can guide corticosteroid injection if required.

Do I need a GP referral for a hip scan?

No. At Sonoworld, you can self-refer directly without a GP referral. Simply book online or call our team.

How long does a hip ultrasound scan take?

The scan typically takes 20–30 minutes. Your sonographer will provide immediate verbal feedback, and a written report will be emailed within 24 hours.

Can ultrasound guide a hip injection?

Yes. Ultrasound guidance significantly improves the accuracy of hip injections compared to landmark-guided injections. If you require a guided injection, please ask our team about this service.

If the scan confirms inflammation or a treatable soft-tissue problem, an ultrasound-guided cortisone injection can often be arranged at the same clinic, from £250.
