About This Scan

Expert Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound provides real-time, high-resolution imaging of joints, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue. Unlike MRI, it allows dynamic assessment — structures can be examined in motion, both sides compared simultaneously, and the sonographer can provide immediate verbal feedback during the examination.

At Sonoworld, all MSK scans are performed by HCPC-registered consultant sonographers with specialist musculoskeletal expertise, using high-resolution GE ultrasound equipment. No GP referral is required, and a comprehensive written report is delivered within 24 hours.

Why patients choose Sonoworld

What We Assess

What We Check During Your Scan

Our consultant sonographers perform a systematic assessment of all relevant structures. Here is what is included in your examination.

Rotator Cuff

Supraspinatus, infraspinatus & subscapularis tendons

Assessment of the four rotator cuff tendons for tears, tendinopathy, and calcific deposits. The supraspinatus is the most commonly injured tendon and is assessed in full throughout its length.

Subacromial Bursa & AC Joint

Bursitis, impingement & acromioclavicular pathology

Evaluation of the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa for fluid, thickening, and impingement. The acromioclavicular joint is assessed for osteoarthritis and joint effusion.

Biceps Tendon

Long head of biceps — tenosynovitis & tears

The long head of the biceps tendon is assessed within the bicipital groove for tenosynovitis, partial tears, and subluxation — a common cause of anterior shoulder pain.

How to Prepare for Your Scan

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a shoulder ultrasound scan show?

A shoulder ultrasound scan provides detailed imaging of the rotator cuff tendons, subacromial bursa, biceps tendon, and acromioclavicular joint. It can identify rotator cuff tears (partial or full thickness), tendinopathy, calcific deposits, bursitis, and biceps tenosynovitis.

Is shoulder ultrasound better than MRI?

For soft tissue assessment of the rotator cuff and biceps tendon, high-resolution ultrasound is considered equivalent to MRI in most cases, and has the advantage of being dynamic. MRI provides better assessment of the labrum and bone marrow.

Do I need a GP referral for a shoulder scan?

No. At Sonoworld, you can self-refer directly without a GP referral. Simply book online or call our team.

How long does a shoulder ultrasound scan take?

The scan typically takes 20–30 minutes. Your sonographer will provide immediate verbal feedback, and a written report will be emailed within 24 hours.

Can ultrasound detect a rotator cuff tear?

Yes. High-resolution ultrasound is highly accurate for detecting both partial and full-thickness rotator cuff tears, with sensitivity and specificity comparable to MRI for supraspinatus tears.
