Overview

What Is a 3D/4D Bonding Ultrasound-Scan?

Standard 2D ultrasound sends sound waves in a single plane and reflects them back as a flat greyscale image. The 3D technique sends sound waves at multiple angles simultaneously; a powerful processing algorithm reconstructs the returning echoes into a three-dimensional surface-rendered volume. Add the dimension of time — continuous real-time acquisition — and you have 4D imaging: a live, moving picture of your baby.

The GE Voluson E10 platform used at Sonoworld produces the highest-resolution fetal surface rendering currently available in private practice. At 26–30 weeks, the baby has sufficient subcutaneous fat to define facial features clearly, and amniotic fluid volume is typically at its peak — both factors that directly determine image quality.

Why 26–30 Weeks?

Before 26 weeks, facial fat is still developing and features can appear angular. After 30 weeks, the baby descends deeper into the pelvis and the head may engage, reducing the acoustic window. The 26–30 week window consistently produces the clearest facial images.

  • Real-time 4D video of baby's movements, yawns, and expressions
  • Detailed surface rendering of face, hands, and feet
  • Growth report with estimated weight at current gestation
  • Wellbeing assessment: baby's position and placental location
  • Complimentary gender confirmation if requested
  • No preparation required — no fasting, no full bladder

Imaging Detail

What You Will See During the Scan

The 4D image quality depends on baby's position, the amount of amniotic fluid in front of the face, and gestational age. When conditions are optimal, the level of detail is remarkable.

Feature 2D Ultrasound 3D/4D Ultrasound
Image type Flat greyscale cross-section Three-dimensional surface rendering
Facial features Profile view only Full face — nose, lips, cheeks, eyelids
Movement Visible but flat Real-time 4D video of yawns, stretches, smiles
Hands & feet Outline only Individual fingers and toes visible
Clinical value Diagnostic — anatomy, measurements Bonding + growth & wellbeing assessment
Keepsakes Standard B&W thermal print Framed prints, colour images, USB, keyring

When Image Quality May Be Limited

If baby's face is pressed against the placenta or uterine wall, or if amniotic fluid is low, the surface rendering will be less clear. In these cases the sonographer will attempt to reposition the baby through gentle abdominal movement. Drinking extra water in the week before the scan and arriving well-hydrated improves fluid levels and image quality.

Before Your Scan

How to Prepare for Your 3D/4D Scan

No formal preparation is required. A few simple steps in the days before your appointment will improve image quality significantly.

Hydration — the week before

Drink two extra glasses of water each day in the week leading up to your scan. Good maternal hydration directly increases amniotic fluid volume, which acts as the acoustic window for 4D imaging. More fluid around the baby's face means sharper, clearer images.

No full bladder required

Unlike early pregnancy scans, a full bladder is not needed for the 3D/4D scan. Arrive comfortably — there is no need to hold urine before the appointment.

Encourage baby to move

If baby is asleep during the scan, a small amount of something sweet — chocolate, fresh orange juice, or a fizzy drink — can encourage movement. Avoid caffeine before the appointment. A short walk around the clinic before entering the scan room can also help.

What to wear

Wear loose, comfortable clothing with easy access to the abdomen. A two-piece outfit or a top that can be lifted easily is ideal. Gel will be applied to the skin during the scan.

What to Bring

  • Booking confirmation (email or text)
  • Previous scan reports or maternity notes if available
  • A small sweet snack or juice to encourage baby to move
  • Insurance authorisation code if claiming through private health insurance

Gestational Timing Is Important

Booking outside the 26–30 week window significantly reduces image quality. Before 26 weeks, facial fat is insufficient for clear surface rendering. After 30 weeks, the baby's head may be engaged in the pelvis, limiting the acoustic window. Please check your gestational age before booking.

The Scan Process

What Happens During the Appointment

The 30-minute appointment follows a structured sequence to maximise both image quality and clinical value.

1

History & Consent

The sonographer takes a brief clinical history — gestational age, any concerns, whether you wish gender to be confirmed — and explains the scan process.

2

2D Orientation

A standard 2D scan is performed first to locate the baby's position, confirm the acoustic window, and identify the best approach for 3D/4D acquisition.

3

3D/4D Imaging

The GE Voluson 4D mode is activated. The sonographer captures the baby's face, hands, and feet in real-time 4D. If baby is not in an optimal position, gentle abdominal repositioning is attempted.

4

Growth & Wellbeing

Biometric measurements are taken — head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length — to calculate estimated fetal weight and plot growth on a centile chart. Placental position and baby's presentation are confirmed.

5

Keepsakes & Report

The sonographer prepares your keepsake package — framed prints, USB, keyring, and colour image — while verbally summarising the growth and wellbeing findings. The written growth report is provided before you leave.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 3D/4D scan safe for my baby?
Diagnostic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves — not radiation — and has an established safety record spanning over 50 years. The BMUS (British Medical Ultrasound Society) states that there are no confirmed adverse effects from diagnostic ultrasound when used appropriately. The 3D/4D scan uses the same sound wave technology as standard 2D ultrasound; the difference is in how the computer processes the returning echoes to create a surface-rendered image.
What is the best time to have a 3D/4D scan?
The optimal window is 26–30 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the baby has sufficient subcutaneous fat for clear facial definition, amniotic fluid volume is typically at its highest, and the baby is still small enough to be imaged fully within the acoustic window. Before 26 weeks, facial features can appear angular due to insufficient fat. After 30 weeks, the baby's head may engage in the pelvis, reducing the available imaging angle.
What if my baby is not in a good position?
If the baby's face is pressed against the placenta, uterine wall, or the baby's own limbs, the sonographer will attempt gentle repositioning through abdominal movement and ask you to change position. In some cases, a short walk around the clinic helps. The 30-minute appointment allows sufficient time for repositioning attempts. If a clear image cannot be obtained, the sonographer will advise accordingly.
Can I find out the gender at the 3D/4D scan?
Yes. Gender confirmation is included at no extra charge. Simply let the sonographer know at the start of the appointment whether you wish to find out. If you already know the gender and do not wish it to be mentioned, please advise the sonographer before the scan begins.
Can my partner and family attend?
Partners, grandparents, and children are welcome in the scan room. The appointment is designed to be a shared experience. Please let us know at the time of booking if you are bringing a larger group so we can ensure the room is prepared accordingly.
When will the 3D/4D scan be available again?
The 3D/4D bonding scan is temporarily unavailable. We are working to restore this service and will update this page as soon as a return date is confirmed. Please call us on 020 3633 4902 or email info@sonoworld.co.uk to be added to the notification list.
