About This Scan

Expert Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound provides real-time, high-resolution imaging of the small joints, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue of the hand and fingers. Unlike MRI, it allows dynamic assessment — the fingers can be examined as they bend and straighten, both hands compared side by side, and the sonographer can give immediate verbal feedback during the examination.

At Sonoworld, all MSK scans are performed by HCPC-registered consultant sonographers with specialist musculoskeletal expertise, using high-resolution ultrasound equipment. No GP referral is required, and a comprehensive written report is delivered within 24 hours.

What We Assess

What We Check During Your Scan

Our consultant sonographers perform a systematic assessment of the structures of the hand and fingers. Here is what is included in your examination.

Flexor Tendons & Trigger Finger

Trigger finger & flexor tendon problems

Assessment of the flexor tendons and their pulleys for triggering, thickening, and tenosynovitis. Dynamic scanning can demonstrate the catching or locking of trigger finger in real time and show whether the A1 pulley is involved.

Small Joints & Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis & osteoarthritis

Evaluation of the finger and knuckle joints for synovitis, joint effusion, erosions, and osteoarthritic change. Ultrasound with Doppler can detect active inflammation in the small joints, which is useful in the assessment of rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis.

Dupuytren's & Soft Tissue

Dupuytren's disease, lumps & ganglion cysts

Assessment of Dupuytren's nodules and cords in the palm, ganglion cysts, giant cell tumours of the tendon sheath, lipomas, and other soft-tissue lumps. Ultrasound can characterise a lump, measure it, and help distinguish solid from cystic masses.

Preparation

How to Prepare for Your Scan

No preparation is required for a hand and finger ultrasound scan. Remove any rings and hand or wrist jewellery before your appointment. You may be asked to move your fingers during the scan so that the tendons and joints can be assessed in motion.

On the day of your scan
  • Arrive 5 minutes before your appointment time.
  • Bring any previous scan reports, X-rays, or MRI results if available.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing for the area being scanned.
  • No fasting or special preparation is required.
  • You may bring a companion to your appointment.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a hand ultrasound scan show?

A hand and finger ultrasound scan provides detailed imaging of the flexor and extensor tendons, the small finger and knuckle joints, the palmar fascia, and soft-tissue lumps. It can help identify trigger finger, Dupuytren's disease, tendon injuries, synovitis from arthritis, ganglion cysts, and other soft-tissue masses.

Can ultrasound detect arthritis in the hands?

Yes. Ultrasound with Doppler can detect synovitis, joint effusions, and early erosions in the small joints of the hand, and can show active inflammation. It is a useful tool in assessing rheumatoid and other inflammatory arthritis, alongside your specialist's clinical assessment and blood tests.

Do I need a GP referral for a hand scan?

No. At Sonoworld, you can self-refer directly without a GP referral. Simply book online or call our team on 020 3633 4902.

How long does a hand ultrasound scan take?

The scan typically takes around 30 minutes. Your sonographer will provide immediate verbal feedback, and a written report will be emailed to you within 24 hours to share with your GP, physiotherapist, or specialist.

Can ultrasound diagnose trigger finger?

Yes. Ultrasound is well suited to trigger finger because the fingers can be scanned as they move, showing the flexor tendon catching at the A1 pulley in real time. It also shows tendon thickening and tenosynovitis, and can guide a corticosteroid injection if one is needed.

If the scan confirms inflammation or a treatable soft-tissue problem, an ultrasound-guided cortisone injection can often be arranged at the same clinic, from £250.
