Before Your Appointment
The preparation you need depends on which type of pelvic scan is being performed. Your booking confirmation will confirm the type — please read these instructions carefully before you arrive.
Transabdominal Scan — Full Bladder Required
Drink 1 litre (4 large glasses) of water exactly 1 hour before your appointment.
Do not empty your bladder beforehand — a full bladder acts as an acoustic window for clear pelvic imaging.
If your bladder is not sufficiently full on arrival, the scan may need to be rescheduled.
Transvaginal Scan — Empty Bladder Required
Empty your bladder immediately before the scan.
A transvaginal scan uses a small, smooth probe and provides sharper images of the uterus and ovaries.
The procedure is performed with your full consent and can be stopped at any time.
Transabdominal (TA)
Probe glides over the lower abdomen. Suitable for most patients. Requires a full bladder.
Transvaginal (TV)
Internal probe provides higher-resolution images. Empty bladder required. Always performed with consent.

Booking FAQs
Common questions about booking, preparation, and what to expect.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is required. You can self-refer and book your private pelvic ultrasound-scan directly online or by phone. If your GP has recommended the scan, you are welcome to share your report with them afterwards.
How do I know whether I need a transabdominal or transvaginal scan?
Your sonographer will assess which approach gives the clearest images on the day. In many cases, both techniques are used during the same appointment. Your booking confirmation will include preparation instructions for both scan types so you arrive ready for either.
Can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?
Yes. You can reschedule or cancel your appointment free of charge up to 24 hours before your booking. Cancellations within 24 hours may be subject to a cancellation fee. Please call us on 020 3633 4902 or email us to make changes.
Will my insurance cover this scan?
Many private health insurance providers cover diagnostic ultrasound-scans. We recommend contacting your insurer before booking to confirm coverage. We can provide an itemised invoice for your claim. Please bring your insurance details to your appointment.
How quickly will I receive my results?
You will receive immediate verbal feedback from your sonographer at the end of your appointment. Your comprehensive written medical report, including high-resolution diagnostic images, will be emailed to you securely within 24 hours.
Is the scan completely confidential?
All appointments and medical reports are strictly confidential. Your data is handled in full compliance with GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. We will never share your information with your GP or any third party without your explicit written consent.
