Your Heart Can Be at Risk Long Before You Feel It

Most serious cardiovascular events — heart attacks, strokes, sudden cardiac death — do not arrive without warning. They arrive after years of silent, progressive changes to your heart's structure, rhythm, and arterial health. The problem is that these changes rarely cause noticeable symptoms until they reach a critical threshold.

If you have a family history of heart disease, have been told your blood pressure or cholesterol is elevated, or are experiencing unexplained palpitations, breathlessness, or chest discomfort, you are not simply being cautious by seeking a comprehensive cardiac assessment — you are being rational. The NHS pathway for non-urgent cardiac concerns typically involves months of waiting for individual tests across multiple appointments. By the time a full picture emerges, the window for early intervention may have narrowed.

A proactive cardiac screening package provides that full picture in a single visit. It does not replace your GP or cardiologist — it gives you the clinical evidence you and your doctor need to make informed decisions quickly, without the uncertainty of a fragmented assessment process.

Symptoms That Warrant Immediate Assessment
  • Palpitations or a racing, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat
  • Unexplained breathlessness during normal daily activity
  • Chest tightness, pressure, or discomfort — even if mild or intermittent
  • Dizziness or light-headedness without an obvious cause
  • Swelling in the ankles or legs (a potential sign of reduced cardiac function)
  • Fatigue disproportionate to your level of physical activity
  • A family history of sudden cardiac death before the age of 60

What Is Included in the Cardiovascular Health Package?

The package bundles three complementary diagnostic assessments that together provide a comprehensive view of your cardiovascular and vascular health. Each test addresses a distinct dimension — arterial health, aortic risk, and cardiac structure — that no single test can cover alone.

Carotid Artery Scan

Stroke Risk & Vascular Health

A Doppler ultrasound of the carotid arteries — the main vessels supplying blood to your brain — measures arterial wall thickness (intima-media thickness) and detects atherosclerotic plaque. Carotid plaque is a strong independent predictor of stroke and future cardiovascular events. This assessment provides the vascular dimension that no cardiac test alone can offer.

Assesses: Plaque, stenosis, stroke risk

AAA Screening

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

An ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta — the main artery supplying blood to the lower body. AAA screening measures the diameter of the aorta to detect any dangerous widening (aneurysm) before it ruptures. Aortic aneurysm is often entirely silent until rupture, making this scan a critical component of vascular health assessment for anyone over 50 or with cardiovascular risk factors.

Assesses: Aortic diameter, aneurysm risk

Echocardiogram

Heart Structure & Function

A real-time ultrasound of your heart that visualises the four chambers, the pumping function (ejection fraction), and the integrity of all four heart valves. This is the definitive test for identifying cardiomyopathy, valve disease, pericardial effusion, and signs of previous undetected heart damage. The scan takes approximately 30–40 minutes and is entirely painless.

Assesses: Structure, function, valves, chambers

Combined Written Report Within 24 Hours

All three assessments — carotid artery scan, AAA screening, and echocardiogram — are synthesised into a single comprehensive report by our consultant, covering findings, risk stratification, and specific next-step recommendations. Where appropriate, the report includes a letter suitable for sharing with your GP or a specialist cardiologist. You will also receive immediate verbal feedback during your appointment.

Who Should Consider Cardiac Screening?

This package is designed for two distinct groups: those with identified risk factors who want a proactive baseline assessment, and those experiencing symptoms who want a comprehensive evaluation without the wait of an NHS referral pathway.

The Proactive Professional

You have no alarming symptoms, but you are aware of your risk profile. You want a clear baseline and the confidence that comes from knowing your cardiovascular system has been properly assessed.

  • Family history of heart disease or stroke
  • Diagnosed with high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes
  • Current or former smoker
  • Age 45 or above, seeking a health baseline
  • Athlete requiring cardiac clearance before intensive training

The Most Common Mistake We See

Patients who wait until symptoms become severe before seeking assessment. Atrial fibrillation, for example, is present in an estimated 1.4 million people in the UK — and a significant proportion are undiagnosed because it causes no pain and only intermittent symptoms. An undetected arrhythmia increases stroke risk by up to five times. A single resting ECG, as part of this package, can identify it in minutes. Waiting is not a neutral decision.

How to Prepare for Your Cardiac Screening

Preparation for this combined package is straightforward. There is no fasting requirement and no need to stop any regular medications. The steps below ensure each assessment runs smoothly and produces the clearest possible results.

1

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing

You will need easy access to your chest for both the echocardiogram and the ECG. A loose top or shirt that can be removed easily is ideal. Avoid tight-fitting garments or dresses.

2

Avoid heavy meals for two hours beforehand

A light meal is fine. A heavy meal can cause diaphragmatic movement that slightly affects the acoustic windows used during the echocardiogram. You do not need to fast.

3

Continue your regular medications

Take all prescribed medications as normal unless your GP has specifically advised otherwise. Do not stop any cardiac medications — including beta-blockers or antihypertensives — before the appointment.

4

Bring a list of your current medications

Our consultant will review your medication list as part of the assessment context. This helps ensure the report and any recommendations are clinically appropriate for your current treatment.

5

Arrive five minutes early

This allows time for a brief pre-assessment consultation where you can discuss your symptoms, risk factors, and any specific concerns with the clinician before the scans begin.

What Happens During Your Visit

Your appointment follows a structured sequence designed to maximise clinical efficiency whilst giving you time to ask questions at each stage.

Arrival · 5 min
Pre-assessment consultation
Brief discussion of your symptoms, risk factors, and medical history. The clinician will explain the sequence of assessments and answer any questions.
Step 1 · 30–40 min
Echocardiogram
You lie on your left side on the examination couch. A small ultrasound probe is placed on your chest with gel. The clinician will image your heart from several positions, assessing all four chambers and valves in real time.
Step 2 · 10 min
Resting ECG
Ten small electrode stickers are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. You remain still for approximately 60 seconds while the machine records your heart's electrical activity. The electrodes are then removed.
Step 3 · 20–30 min
Carotid Doppler Ultrasound
You lie on your back with your head turned slightly to one side. The probe is applied to each side of your neck in turn, imaging the carotid arteries and measuring blood flow velocity and arterial wall thickness.
Close · 10 min
Immediate verbal feedback
The clinician discusses the preliminary findings with you before you leave. You will know whether anything significant has been identified and what the next steps are likely to be, before your written report arrives.

We accept private medical insurance from AXA, Healix, and WPA. Please confirm coverage with your insurer before booking. Self-pay patients are also welcome, with no requirement for pre-authorisation.

When to Book — and Why Timing Matters

Cardiovascular risk is not static. Certain life events and clinical findings significantly increase the urgency of a comprehensive cardiac assessment. If any of the following apply to you, booking sooner rather than later is the clinically appropriate decision.

Recent diagnosis of high blood pressure
Book within weeks

Sustained hypertension causes progressive changes to the heart muscle (left ventricular hypertrophy) that are detectable on echocardiogram before any symptoms develop. Early detection allows treatment to be adjusted before structural damage becomes permanent.

Family history of sudden cardiac death under 60
Book promptly

Inherited cardiomyopathies — including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — are the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. An echocardiogram is the primary screening tool for first-degree relatives of affected individuals.

New or worsening palpitations
Book this week

Palpitations can indicate benign ectopic beats or serious arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. Without an ECG, it is impossible to distinguish between the two. The risk of leaving an undiagnosed arrhythmia untreated — including stroke — is not proportionate to the ease of detection.

Starting a new intensive exercise programme
Book before you begin

Sudden cardiac events during exercise are rare but disproportionately associated with undetected structural heart conditions. Athletes over 35 — particularly those returning to high-intensity training after a break — benefit significantly from pre-participation cardiac clearance.

Cholesterol above 6 mmol/L
Book within a month

Elevated LDL cholesterol accelerates atherosclerosis. A carotid Doppler can quantify the extent of plaque formation already present in your carotid arteries, providing a direct measure of vascular age that a blood test alone cannot offer.

Approaching or past age 50 with no prior cardiac assessment
Book this year

Cardiovascular disease risk rises substantially after 50 in both men and women. A baseline cardiac screening at this stage establishes a reference point for all future assessments and identifies any subclinical changes that warrant monitoring or intervention.

Your Report and Next Steps

The value of a cardiac screening package lies not just in the data collected, but in how that data is synthesised, communicated, and acted upon. Our reporting process is designed to give you clarity, not confusion.

What Your Report Covers

Your combined report is written by the consulting clinician and covers all three assessments in a single document. It is structured to be readable by both you and any healthcare professional you choose to share it with.

  • Echocardiogram findings: Heart dimensions, ejection fraction, valve function, and any structural abnormalities identified
  • ECG interpretation: Rhythm classification, rate, conduction intervals, and any significant findings
  • Carotid Doppler results: Intima-media thickness measurements, plaque characterisation, and blood flow velocities
  • Risk stratification: An overall cardiovascular risk summary based on all three assessments combined
  • Next-step recommendations: Specific, actionable guidance — whether that is reassurance, lifestyle advice, GP discussion, or specialist referral
  • GP letter (where appropriate): A clinical summary suitable for onward referral to a cardiologist or your GP

After Your Results

The outcome of your screening will fall into one of three categories, each with a clear pathway.

All Clear

No significant findings. Your report provides a documented baseline for future comparison. We recommend repeat screening every 3–5 years depending on your risk profile.

Findings Requiring Monitoring

Mild or borderline findings that do not require immediate intervention but warrant monitoring. Your report will specify the recommended follow-up interval and whether GP discussion is advised.

Findings Requiring Referral

Significant findings that require prompt assessment by a cardiologist. Your report will include a GP letter, and our team will advise you on the appropriate urgency and referral pathway.

Package Pricing and How to Book

The cardiac screening package is priced as a single bundled appointment. Booking all three assessments together is significantly more cost-effective than arranging them individually, and ensures a cohesive, consultant-interpreted result.

No. You can self-refer directly to Sonoworld without a GP referral. Simply book online or call our clinic on 020 3633 4902 to arrange your appointment. If you do have a GP referral letter, please bring it with you as it provides useful clinical context.
Yes. The echocardiogram we perform uses the same diagnostic ultrasound technology and follows the same clinical protocols as an NHS echocardiogram. The key difference is that ours is performed and interpreted by a consultant with 20+ years of experience, in an unhurried appointment, with results available within 24 hours rather than weeks.
The combined appointment takes approximately 60–90 minutes. This includes a brief pre-assessment consultation, the echocardiogram (30–40 minutes), the resting ECG (approximately 10 minutes), the carotid Doppler ultrasound (20–30 minutes), and immediate verbal feedback from the clinician at the close of the appointment.
You will receive immediate verbal feedback from our consultant during the appointment itself — you will not leave without knowing whether anything significant has been identified. The comprehensive written report covering all three assessments is delivered within 24 hours.
The stroke screening package focuses specifically on the carotid arteries and stroke risk assessment. The cardiac screening package is broader — it adds an echocardiogram (heart structure and function) and a resting ECG (heart rhythm) to the carotid assessment, creating a comprehensive cardiac check. If you are specifically concerned about stroke risk, the stroke screening package may be sufficient. If you want a full cardiovascular assessment covering structure, rhythm, and vascular risk, the cardiac screening package is the appropriate choice.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your chest. Avoid a heavy meal for two hours before the appointment — a light meal is fine. Continue all regular medications as normal unless your GP has specifically advised otherwise. Bring a list of your current medications if possible.
Sonoworld accepts private medical insurance from AXA, Healix, and WPA. Please contact your insurer directly to confirm whether the cardiac screening package is covered under your policy and to obtain pre-authorisation if required. Self-pay patients are also welcome with no pre-authorisation needed.
Yes. You can book the cardiac screening package as a gift or on behalf of a family member. Please call us on 020 3633 4902 to arrange this, as we will need to take the patient's details directly to ensure clinical appropriateness and consent.
