How to Prepare for Your Well Woman Scan

Correct preparation is the single most important factor in scan quality. The Well Woman package combines abdominal and pelvic imaging, which have conflicting requirements — a fasted upper abdomen and a full bladder for the pelvis. Both must be met simultaneously.

Fast for 4 hours

  • No food for at least 4 hours before your appointment
  • No milk, juice, or fizzy drinks — water is fine
  • This keeps the gallbladder distended for clear imaging

Drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before

  • Drink 1 litre of still water approximately 1 hour before your scan
  • Do not empty your bladder before the appointment begins
  • A full bladder is required for clear pelvic imaging

What to Bring

  • Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • Insurance authorisation code (if applicable)
  • Any previous scan reports or referral letters
  • A list of current medications if relevant

Booking Questions

Do I need a GP referral to book?

No GP referral is required. You can self-refer and book directly online or by calling 020 3633 4902. If the scan identifies findings that need follow-up, we provide a written report you can share with your GP or a specialist of your choice.

Can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

Yes. Please give us at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule without charge. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. Call 020 3633 4902 or email info@sonoworld.co.uk to make changes.

Can I use private medical insurance?

Yes. We accept AXA, Healix, WPA, and most other major private medical insurers. Please call us before booking online so we can process your insurance authorisation code correctly. Self-pay patients are always welcome.

What happens if I forget to prepare correctly?

If you have eaten within 4 hours of your appointment, the gallbladder may not be adequately distended and the abdominal component may be incomplete. If your bladder is not full, the pelvic organs cannot be visualised clearly. In both cases, you may need to rebook. Please follow the preparation instructions carefully to avoid this.

How quickly will I receive my report?

Your written report with annotated images is provided on the same day as your appointment, usually within a few hours. The report is sent digitally and can be shared directly with your GP or specialist.

Is the scan confidential?

Yes. Sonoworld is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). All patient data is held securely and in strict confidence. Your results are not shared with your GP unless you specifically request this.
