How to Prepare for Your Hernia Scan

A hernia ultrasound requires no special preparation. You do not need to fast, follow a special diet, or arrive with a full bladder. Simply wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the groin and abdomen.

The scan uses a dynamic technique: the sonographer will ask you to cough or bear down (the Valsalva manoeuvre) during the examination, and will scan you both lying down and standing up. This increases intra-abdominal pressure and reveals hernias that may retract and remain hidden when you are at rest. Wearing clothing that can be easily adjusted will help the examination proceed smoothly.

What to Wear

  • Loose trousers or shorts that can be lowered to the groin
  • A top that can be raised to expose the abdomen
  • Avoid tight belts or clothing with metal fastenings

What to Bring

  • Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • Insurance authorisation code (if applicable)
  • Any previous scan reports or referral letters
  • A list of current medications if relevant

Scan Includes

  • Inguinal canal — direct and indirect hernias
  • Femoral canal — femoral hernia assessment
  • Umbilical & epigastric regions
  • Dynamic Valsalva manoeuvre for occult hernias
  • Written report within 24 hours, with annotated images
  • Instant verbal results from your sonographer

FAQs

Booking Questions

Do I need a GP referral to book?

No GP referral is required. You can self-refer and book directly online or by calling 020 3633 4902. If the scan identifies findings that require follow-up, we provide a written report you can share with your GP or a specialist surgeon.

What is the difference between £235 and £350?

£235 is the all-inclusive price for a single hernia ultrasound (one site, e.g. left groin or umbilical). £350 covers a bilateral examination (e.g. both groins) or two separate abdominal-wall sites in the same appointment. Choose the bilateral option if you have symptoms on both sides or want both groins assessed at once.

Can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

Yes. Please give us at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule without charge. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. Call 020 3633 4902 or email info@sonoworld.co.uk to make changes.

Can I use private medical insurance?

Yes. We accept AXA, Healix, WPA and most other major private medical insurers. Please call us before booking online so we can process your insurance authorisation code correctly. Self-pay patients are always welcome.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for the scan?

No special preparation is needed. You do not need to fast or arrive with a full bladder. Simply wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the groin and abdomen. Eat and drink normally before your appointment.

How quickly will I receive my report?

You receive instant verbal results from your sonographer at the end of the appointment. The signed written report with annotated images follows within 24 hours, sent digitally and ready to share directly with your GP or surgeon.

Is the scan confidential?

Yes. Sonoworld is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). All patient data is held securely and in strict confidence. Your results are not shared with your GP unless you specifically request this.
