Before Your Appointment

How to Prepare for Your Stroke Screening

The abdominal aorta component of the package requires a 4-hour fast to minimise bowel gas and maximise image quality. The carotid and leg arterial components require no special preparation. Please read the instructions below carefully before your appointment.

4-Hour Fast Required (Aorta Assessment)

  • Do not eat for at least 4 hours before your appointment.
  • Water is permitted and encouraged — staying well hydrated improves image quality.
  • Avoid fizzy drinks before the appointment — carbonated beverages increase bowel gas.
  • Continue all regular medications as normal, including antihypertensives and statins.

What to Wear

  • Loose, comfortable two-piece clothing — the sonographer needs access to your neck, abdomen, and both legs
  • Trousers or shorts that can be rolled up easily to the thigh for the leg arterial assessment
  • A top that can be raised to expose the full abdomen
  • Avoid tight belts, necklaces, or clothing with metal fastenings around the neck

What to Bring

  • Insurance authorisation code (if using private health insurance)
  • List of current medications (or medication packets)
  • Any previous vascular scan reports or blood test results
  • GP referral letter (if you have one — not required)
  • Arrive 5 minutes early to complete a brief cardiovascular history form

Scan Includes

  • Carotid duplex (bilateral) with CIMT measurement
  • Vertebral artery assessment (bilateral)
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) scan with iliac arteries
  • Bilateral leg arterial evaluation (femoral to tibial)
  • Colour Doppler and spectral waveform analysis throughout
  • Verbal feedback during the appointment
  • Same-day written report with annotated images

After You Book

What Happens Next

From booking confirmation to receiving your written report — here is what to expect at each stage.

1

Booking Confirmation

You will receive an email confirmation immediately after booking. The email includes your appointment date and time, clinic address, preparation instructions, and a cancellation link.

2

Arrive at the Clinic

Arrive 5 minutes early at 27 Welbeck Street, Marylebone. Reception will check you in and ask you to complete a brief cardiovascular history form. The sonographer will collect you from the waiting area.

3

Clinical History & Consent

The sonographer reviews your cardiovascular history, current medications, and any symptoms. You will be asked to sign a consent form. This takes approximately 5 minutes and ensures the examination is focused on your specific risk profile.

4

45-Minute Examination

The sonographer performs all three examinations sequentially: carotid and vertebral arteries, abdominal aorta and iliac arteries, then both legs from groin to ankle. You will be asked to change position for the popliteal (behind-knee) assessment. Findings are explained verbally throughout.

5

Same-Day Written Report

A comprehensive written report with annotated images and clinical recommendations is sent to you by email the same day. If you have provided GP details, the report is copied to your GP. For urgent findings, the sonographer will advise you directly before you leave the clinic.

FAQs

Booking & Appointment Questions

Can I cancel or rearrange my appointment?
Cancellations and rescheduling are accepted up to 24 hours before the appointment at no charge. Cancellations within 24 hours may incur a cancellation fee. Use the link in your confirmation email or call 020 3633 4902.
Do I need to fast before the entire appointment?
Only the abdominal aorta component requires fasting. A 4-hour fast is required before your appointment. The carotid and leg arterial components require no fasting. Drink water freely throughout the fasting period.
Will my GP receive the report automatically?
The report is sent to your GP if you provide their contact details at the time of booking or during the appointment. If you prefer the report to be sent only to you, simply do not provide GP details. You can always forward the report to your GP yourself.
Is the screening covered by private health insurance?
Sonoworld is recognised by most major private health insurers. Contact your insurer before booking to confirm coverage and obtain an authorisation code. Bring the code to your appointment. If your insurer does not cover screening, self-pay is available at £699.
How will I receive my report?
The written report is sent to you by secure email the same day as your appointment. The report includes measurements, annotated ultrasound images, clinical findings, and recommendations. A printed copy is available on request.
What if the scan finds something that needs urgent attention?
If the sonographer identifies a finding that requires urgent action — such as a large aortic aneurysm or severe carotid stenosis — they will advise you directly before you leave the clinic and, with your consent, contact your GP immediately. The report will clearly indicate the urgency and recommended next steps.
