How to Prepare for Your Growth Scan

No special preparation required

A growth scan is performed transabdominally with warm gel on your abdomen. Unlike an early pregnancy scan, you do not need a full bladder. Eat and drink normally before your appointment.

Preparation checklist

  • Eat and drink normally — no fasting or full bladder required
  • Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing — you will need to expose your abdomen
  • Bring your maternity notes and any previous scan reports
  • Bring your booking confirmation email
  • Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time
  • Your partner is welcome to attend and watch the scan
  • Continue taking any prescribed medications as normal

Serial growth scans

If you have risk factors such as gestational diabetes or a previous IUGR, serial growth scans every 2–4 weeks from 28 weeks provide a growth trajectory. Repeat scans are each £235 with no additional fees.

The Growth Ultrasound Scan

The growth ultrasound sometimes called a well-being scan, is being carried on the 3rd trimester of pregnancy to check the fetal growth and baby's wellbeing.

Reasons for having this ultrasound scan include:

What Happens After You Book

Confirmation email

You will receive an immediate email confirmation with your appointment date, time, and preparation instructions. Check your junk folder if it does not arrive within a few minutes.

Prepare for your appointment

No special preparation is needed. Eat and drink normally. Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing. Bring your maternity notes and any previous scan reports.

Arrive at our clinic

Arrive at 29 Weymouth Street 10 minutes before your appointment. Our reception team will greet you. Your partner is welcome in the waiting area and scan room.

Your growth scan (20–30 min)

Your HCPC-registered sonographer takes a brief history, then performs the scan. Warm gel is applied to your abdomen. HC, AC, and FL are measured, amniotic fluid and placenta assessed, and Doppler performed if indicated.

Immediate results

Your sonographer calculates the estimated fetal weight, explains your baby's growth percentile, and discusses what the findings mean. Printed photos are provided to take home.

Detailed written report

You receive a comprehensive written growth report with all measurements, percentiles, fluid and placental findings, and clinical recommendations to share with your midwife or obstetrician. We are available by phone or email for any questions after your appointment.

Booking Questions Answered

Do I need a GP referral to book a growth scan?
No GP referral is required. You can book directly online or by calling 020 3633 4902. A growth scan is a self-referral service available to any expectant mother from 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Do I need a full bladder for a growth scan?
No. A growth scan is performed transabdominally and no special preparation is required. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment. A full bladder is not needed at this gestation.
Can I get a same-day appointment?
Same-day and next-day appointments are often available. If you cannot find a suitable slot online, call us on 020 3633 4902 and we will do our best to accommodate you on the same day.
What is included in the £235 price?
The £235 price is all-inclusive and covers: a 20–30 minute appointment with an HCPC-registered sonographer, HC, AC, and FL measurements, estimated fetal weight calculation, growth percentile assessment, amniotic fluid volume check, placenta position and appearance, Doppler blood flow if clinically indicated, printed ultrasound photos, and a detailed written growth report. No hidden fees apply.
Can I bring my partner or a support person?
Yes. Your partner or a support person is welcome to attend and watch the scan on the second screen in the room. Please mention this when booking so we can ensure the room is set up for two people.
How do I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

Will I receive a written report to share with my midwife?
