Before Your Appointment

Follicular tracking uses a transvaginal approach. Preparation is straightforward — no fasting and no full bladder are required.

Transvaginal Scan — Simple Preparation

  • No fasting required — eat and drink normally before your appointment.
  • Empty your bladder immediately before the scan for comfort.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing for easy access.
  • The scan is performed with your full consent and can be paused or stopped at any time.

Cycle Timing — When to Book

  • Count day 1 as the first day of full menstrual flow.
  • Book your first appointment for day 7, 8, or 9 of your cycle.
  • For IVF cycles, follow the schedule provided by your fertility clinic.
  • If you are unsure of your cycle day, call us on 020 3633 4902 and we will advise.

Follicular Tracking Ultrasound

Follicular tracking means that you are monitoring the number and size of your follicles during your cycle. Follicular tracking is an ultrasound transvaginal scan being used to evaluate the number and size of the ovarian follicles. Follicular tracking can be used to monitor your fertility and confirm the best time to conceive.

Follicular tracking is also being used to track the number and size of the ovarian follicles during IVF treatment.

How much does follicle tracking costs?

What Happens After You Book

From the moment you confirm your appointment to receiving your scan report, here is exactly what to expect at every stage.

You will receive an immediate email confirming your appointment time, clinic address, and cycle-day preparation instructions.

Arrive at the clinic

Come to 29 Weymouth Street, Marylebone. Arrive 5 minutes early to complete a brief patient history form. Empty your bladder on arrival.

Brief history & consent

Your sonographer will take a brief fertility history, confirm your cycle day, and explain the transvaginal procedure before obtaining your consent.

Follicular tracking scan

The transvaginal scan takes approximately 20 minutes. Your sonographer measures follicle sizes, counts antral follicles, and assesses endometrial thickness and pattern.

Report & next steps

Immediate verbal feedback with all measurements. Your written report and images are sent digitally the same day. The report advises on optimal timing for intercourse, trigger injection, or IUI, and recommends when to return for your next scan.

Booking FAQs

When in my cycle should I book the first scan?
Book your first appointment for day 7, 8, or 9 of your cycle, counting day 1 as the first day of full menstrual flow. If your cycle is shorter than 26 days, start on day 6–7. If your cycle is longer than 32 days, start on day 9–10. For IVF cycles, follow the schedule provided by your fertility clinic.
Can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?
Yes. Please give at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule or cancel. Because follicular tracking is time-sensitive within your cycle, contact us as soon as possible if your plans change so we can find you an alternative slot within the correct cycle window. Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is required. You can self-refer and book directly online or by calling 020 3633 4902. If the scan findings require follow-up, the written report provides all the information your GP or fertility specialist will need.
Can I use private medical insurance?
Yes. We accept AXA, Healix, WPA, and most major private medical insurers. Please call us before booking online so we can process your insurance authorisation code correctly. Self-pay patients are always welcome and no referral is needed.
How many appointments will I need across the cycle?
Most patients require two to three scans per cycle. After your first scan the sonographer will advise on the timing of subsequent appointments based on follicle growth. You can book each subsequent scan at the clinic or online. The series of 3 scans is available at £470.
Is my personal information kept confidential?
Yes. Sonoworld is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). All patient data and scan reports are handled in strict accordance with UK GDPR and NHS Caldicott principles. Your information is never shared with third parties without your explicit consent.
