What does it look at:
Comprehensive blood test including amylase: This includes haematology, biochemistry (Us and Es ,lfts, bone profile) uric acid, Cholesterol + glucose inflammatory markers, iron and amylase. Amylase is usually used to diagnose acute pancreatitis through very high levels of amylase may also indicate other conditions such as cancer of the pancreas, gallbladder disease, perforation of a peptic ulcer etc. If you have abnormal liver tests, it may be recommended that you go on to have the liver profile.
– Faecal occult blood (FOB) – this is a stool test which identifies blood in the stools even if it’s not visible to the naked eye. A positive result can potentially indicate bowel cancer, however, there are other causes such as ulcers, haemorrhoids, diverticular disease etc. Anyone with a positive FOB would require further investigations.
- Faecal calprotectin- raised levels suggests inflammation in the gut and faecal Calprotectin can be raised in infective colitis and in bowel cancer.
