What is an Abdominal Ultrasound-Scan?

An abdominal ultrasound-scan is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic procedure that evaluates the major solid organs and blood vessels in the upper abdominal cavity.

When you experience symptoms like upper abdominal pain, persistent bloating, or have abnormal blood test results (such as elevated liver enzymes), it is essential to visualise the internal organs to identify the root cause. Conditions like gallstones, fatty liver disease, kidney stones, and pancreatic inflammation can all be detected with high accuracy.

The procedure uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time, high-resolution images without the use of ionising radiation, making it completely safe. Our consultant sonographers perform the scan and provide an immediate verbal explanation of the findings.

Common clinical goals

  • Investigate the source of upper abdominal or flank pain.
  • Diagnose gallstones, gallbladder inflammation, or biliary issues.
  • Assess the liver for fatty infiltration, cirrhosis, or lesions.
  • Check the kidneys for stones, cysts, or signs of obstruction.

What the Scan Evaluates

Ultrasound scan of the liver and gallbladder
Biliary System

Liver & Gallbladder

We assess the liver for size, texture, and signs of fatty liver disease or cirrhosis. The gallbladder and bile ducts are thoroughly checked for gallstones, sludge, polyps, or signs of acute inflammation (cholecystitis).

Ultrasound scan of the kidneys
Renal System

Kidneys & Spleen

Both kidneys are measured and examined for cysts, kidney stones, tumours, or signs of obstruction (hydronephrosis). The spleen is also evaluated for enlargement (splenomegaly) or structural abnormalities.

Ultrasound scan of the pancreas and abdominal aorta
Central Abdomen

Pancreas & Aorta

The pancreas is assessed for inflammation (pancreatitis) or masses, though visibility can sometimes be limited by bowel gas. We also measure the abdominal aorta to rule out aneurysms (AAA).

When should you book an abdominal scan?

This scan is highly recommended if you are experiencing upper digestive symptoms, flank pain, or have been advised to investigate abnormal liver or kidney function blood tests.

Common symptoms investigated:

  • Pain in the upper right abdomen (often associated with gallstones).
  • Sharp pain in the back or side (flank) that may indicate kidney stones.
  • Persistent indigestion, nausea, or vomiting after eating fatty foods.
  • Unexplained weight loss, jaundice (yellowing of skin), or abdominal swelling.

Important Preparation

Strict fasting is required for an abdominal scan to ensure clear images of the gallbladder and pancreas.

1
Fast for 4 to 6 hours Do not eat any solid food for at least 4 hours before your appointment. Eating causes the gallbladder to contract, making it impossible to assess for gallstones. It also increases bowel gas, which obscures the pancreas.
2
Clear fluids only You may drink clear fluids such as water or black tea/coffee (without milk) during the fasting period. You do not need a full bladder for an upper abdominal scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral for an abdominal scan?

No, you do not need a GP referral to book a private abdominal ultrasound-scan at Sonoworld. You can self-refer and book your appointment directly online or by phone. If you do have a referral letter, please bring it with you to the appointment.

Why do I need to fast before the scan?

Fasting for 4-6 hours is essential for two reasons. First, eating causes the gallbladder to contract and empty its bile, making it very small and impossible to properly check for gallstones. Second, digesting food creates bowel gas, which blocks the ultrasound waves and obscures organs like the pancreas and aorta.

Can an abdominal scan detect stomach or bowel cancer?

No. Ultrasound is excellent for solid organs (like the liver and kidneys) and fluid-filled sacs (like the gallbladder), but it cannot see inside hollow, gas-filled structures like the stomach or intestines. To investigate the stomach or bowel, an endoscopy, colonoscopy, or CT scan is usually required.

Does this scan check the prostate or uterus?

No, a standard abdominal scan only covers the upper abdomen. To check the prostate, bladder, uterus, or ovaries, you need a pelvic ultrasound scan. If you want both areas checked, you should book our combined Abdomen & Pelvis Scan.

How quickly will I get my results?

Your consultant sonographer will explain the findings to you during the appointment, so you will leave with a clear understanding of the results. A comprehensive written report and digital images will be provided on the same day, ready to share with your GP or specialist.
