The thyroid and neck ultrasound scan is used for diagnosing suspected thyroid disease, for example, a lump in the thyroid or a thyroid that is not functioning properly. Goitre is swelling of the thyroid gland due to multiple nodules and it is a very common reason why our clients book an ultrasound appointment with us.
It is more common to feel lumps on the neck as the structures are superficial. In most cases, these lumps are normal re-active neck lymph nodes and a neck ultrasound scan will help to confirm this. Salivary glands often also cause discomfort or get swollen due to small stones stuck in salivary ducts.
No preparation is necessary for this scan.
Before the scan, our sonographer will explain the examination procedure. For this ultrasound scan, you will have to expose your neck and remove any jewellery. A small amount of ultrasonic gel will be placed on your neck and the transducer will slide up and down your neck to obtain the required images. During and after the examination our sonographer will explain the findings and an ultrasound report will be issued to take to your doctor.
