🥤 For transabdominal scan: Drink 2-3 glasses of water 1 hour before. A comfortably full bladder helps us see better.
🩺 For transvaginal scan: No preparation needed. Empty bladder is actually better. This is the most common approach for very early pregnancy (6-9 weeks).
👗 Wear comfortable clothing — loose waistband or two-piece outfit.
Note: At 6-9 weeks, we'll often use a transvaginal scan (internal) as it gives much clearer images. This is completely safe and will not harm your baby.

Please arrive 10 minutes early. Our reception team understands how anxious you're feeling and will help you feel comfortable.
Your sonographer will perform either a transabdominal scan (gel on your tummy) or transvaginal scan (small probe internally) — whichever gives the best view of your baby.
The transvaginal scan is completely safe. It will not cause miscarriage. Many women find it more comfortable than a very full bladder scan.
We'll discuss what we've seen straight away:
✅ If we see a heartbeat:
⚠️ If we don't see a heartbeat yet:
✅ Heartbeat seen: Celebrate! Your pregnancy is progressing normally. We can offer follow-up scans for continued reassurance.
⏳ Too early to see heartbeat: Book follow-up scan 7-10 days later. Try not to worry — baby may just be smaller than expected.
⚠️ Concerns detected: Clear guidance on next steps — referral to Early Pregnancy Unit, follow-up scan, or GP consultation.
We're here for you: Weekly reassurance scans available if you've had previous loss. Your peace of mind matters.

Real reviews from women who needed early reassurance
"After two previous miscarriages, I was absolutely terrified. I booked an early scan at 7 weeks and seeing that tiny heartbeat flickering on the screen was the most beautiful, emotional, reassuring moment. I cried with relief. The sonographer was so understanding and patient with my anxiety. I'm now 16 weeks and baby is still doing great. Thank you for helping me through those scary early weeks."

"I had some light bleeding at 6.5 weeks and panicked. Called Sonoworld and they got me in the same day. The transvaginal scan was painless and the sonographer found baby's heartbeat straight away — 123 bpm! The relief was overwhelming. Bleeding turned out to be nothing serious. Can't thank them enough for the emergency appointment and compassionate care."

"IVF pregnancy after 3 years of trying. I couldn't wait 6 weeks for the NHS scan — I needed to know my embryo had implanted successfully. Booked at 6 weeks 4 days and we saw the heartbeat! My husband and I both cried. The £89 was worth every penny for the peace of mind. We've been back twice more for reassurance scans. Highly recommend for anxious IVF mums."

"I was so anxious I couldn't sleep. First pregnancy at 38 and I was convinced something would go wrong. Booked at 7 weeks and seeing that heartbeat was life-changing. The sonographer explained everything so clearly and didn't make me feel silly for being worried. The transvaginal scan gave such clear images. Left with photos and so much relief. 100% recommend for worried first-time mums."

"Previous ectopic pregnancy so I was terrified. Booked an early scan at 6.5 weeks to check location. The scan confirmed baby is in my uterus and we saw a heartbeat! The sonographer was so understanding of my previous trauma and took extra time to reassure me. Now having weekly scans until 12 weeks. Worth every penny for the peace of mind."

"Booked at 6 weeks but it was too early — no heartbeat visible yet. I was devastated but the sonographer reassured me this is normal. She recommended coming back in 10 days. Second scan at 7.5 weeks and there it was — strong heartbeat at 150 bpm! So grateful for the honest, compassionate care. The wait was hard but they prepared me well."

Common questions about early pregnancy scans
You can have an early pregnancy scan from 6 weeks onwards (from your last menstrual period, LMP).
If you're unsure of your dates or have irregular cycles, we recommend booking around 7-8 weeks for the best chance of seeing a heartbeat on your first scan.
An early pregnancy scan (6-11 weeks) shows:
You'll receive printed photos to take home.
Maybe. At exactly 6 weeks, a heartbeat may not always be visible yet.
If we don't see a heartbeat at your first scan, it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. It may just be too early. We'll recommend a follow-up scan 7-10 days later when baby will be bigger and easier to see.
The normal fetal heart rate in early pregnancy is 110-170 beats per minute (bpm).
Yes, completely safe. Transvaginal scans are routinely used in early pregnancy and are the gold standard for scanning before 10 weeks.
Why transvaginal?
Safety: The procedure is gentle, uses sound waves (not radiation), and will not harm your baby or cause miscarriage. The probe is only inserted a few centimeters and is much smaller than a speculum used for smear tests.
Many women find it more comfortable than lying with a very full bladder for an abdominal scan.
It depends on the scan type:
Transabdominal scan (through your tummy):
Transvaginal scan (internal):
At 6-9 weeks, we'll often use a transvaginal scan as it gives much clearer images in very early pregnancy. We'll let you know which approach we'll use when you book.

NHS will NOT scan if:
This is where private scans help. You can self-refer, book quickly, and get reassurance without needing to explain or justify your anxiety to the NHS.
Your NHS 12-week scan (nuchal translucency screening) is still important — our early scan doesn't replace it.
Yes, absolutely. Your partner is very welcome to join you in the scan room — if you want them there.
Some women prefer to have their partner for support. Others prefer to see what's happening first before sharing (especially if they're very anxious or have had previous loss).
It's completely your choice. There's no right or wrong — do what feels best for you.
You don't need to wait weeks in anxiety. See your baby's heartbeat and know everything is okay. We're here to help you through those scary early weeks.
