About This Scan

Expert Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound provides real-time, high-resolution imaging of joints, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue. Unlike MRI, it allows dynamic assessment — structures can be examined in motion, both sides compared simultaneously, and the sonographer can provide immediate verbal feedback during the examination.

At Sonoworld, all MSK scans are performed by HCPC-registered consultant sonographers with specialist musculoskeletal expertise, using high-resolution GE ultrasound equipment. No GP referral is required, and a comprehensive written report is delivered within 24 hours.

Why patients choose Sonoworld

  • Dynamic real-time imaging — structures assessed in motion.
  • Instant verbal results and a written report within 24 hours.

What We Assess

What We Check During Your Scan

Our consultant sonographers perform a systematic assessment of all relevant structures. Here is what is included in your examination.

Carpal Tunnel & Median Nerve

Nerve entrapment & carpal tunnel syndrome

Assessment of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel for enlargement, flattening, and increased cross-sectional area — the hallmarks of carpal tunnel syndrome. Ultrasound can confirm the diagnosis and assess severity before surgical referral.

Wrist Tendons

De Quervain's, trigger finger & tenosynovitis

Evaluation of the wrist and hand tendons for tenosynovitis, De Quervain's tenosynovitis (first extensor compartment), trigger finger (flexor tendon nodule), and tendon tears. Dynamic assessment can demonstrate triggering in real time.

Ganglion Cysts & Soft Tissue

Ganglion cysts, lipomas & other masses

Assessment of ganglion cysts (the most common wrist and hand mass), lipomas, and other soft tissue lesions. Ultrasound can confirm the diagnosis, measure the cyst, and guide aspiration if required.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a wrist ultrasound scan show?

A wrist and hand ultrasound scan provides detailed imaging of the median nerve, wrist tendons, extensor and flexor compartments, ganglion cysts, and soft tissue masses. It can identify carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, trigger finger, ganglion cysts, and tendon tears.

Can ultrasound diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome?

Yes. Ultrasound is increasingly used as a first-line investigation for carpal tunnel syndrome. It can measure the cross-sectional area of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel inlet — an enlarged nerve (>10–11mm²) is diagnostic.

Do I need a GP referral for a wrist scan?

No. At Sonoworld, you can self-refer directly without a GP referral. Simply book online or call our team.

How long does a wrist ultrasound scan take?

The scan typically takes 20–30 minutes. Your sonographer will provide immediate verbal feedback, and a written report will be emailed within 24 hours.

What is De Quervain's tenosynovitis?

De Quervain's tenosynovitis is inflammation of the tendons in the first extensor compartment of the wrist, causing pain and swelling at the base of the thumb. Ultrasound confirms the diagnosis and can guide corticosteroid injection.

If the scan confirms inflammation or a treatable soft-tissue problem, an ultrasound-guided cortisone injection can often be arranged at the same clinic, from £250.
