Correct preparation is essential for this scan. The combined abdominal and urinary tract assessment requires both fasting and a full bladder to achieve clear images of all organs. Please read both instructions carefully.
Both of the following are required for this scan:
From confirmation to your written report — here is exactly what to expect at every stage of your appointment.
You will receive an email confirmation with your appointment time, preparation instructions, and clinic address.
The clinic is at 29 Weymouth Street, Marylebone W1G 7DB — a short walk from Great Portland Street and Regent's Park stations.
Your sonographer will assess the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and aorta. You will lie on a couch and a small amount of gel is applied to the skin.
The kidneys, ureters, and bladder are assessed with your bladder full. This is a transabdominal scan — no internal examination is required.
Your sonographer will explain the findings on the day. You are welcome to ask questions and note any key points.
A detailed written report with images is sent to you within 24 hours. The report is formatted for GP or specialist review and accepted by most insurers.
Common questions about booking and attending your abdomen and urinary tract ultrasound-scan.
No GP referral is required. Most patients self-refer directly. If your GP has written a referral letter, bring it along — it helps the sonographer focus on the clinical question. You can also call us if you are unsure which scan is right for your symptoms.
If you have not fasted, the gallbladder will be contracted and may not be clearly visible. If your bladder is empty on arrival, the urinary tract assessment will be limited. Please call us before your appointment if you are unable to prepare correctly — we can advise whether to reschedule or proceed with a partial scan.
Yes. Please give us at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. You can call us on 020 3633 4902 or email info@sonoworld.co.uk. Late cancellations or no-shows may incur a charge — full details are in your booking confirmation.
Many private health insurers accept Sonoworld reports. You will need to check your policy and obtain pre-authorisation from your insurer before your appointment. The report format we provide is accepted by most major UK insurers. Please contact us if you need a specific report format.
Your written report with images is sent by email within 24 hours of your appointment. You will also receive verbal feedback on the day from your sonographer. The report is suitable for sharing with your GP, specialist, or insurer.
Yes. The abdomen and urinary tract ultrasound-scan is the same examination for men and women. The organs assessed — liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, ureters, and bladder — are present in both. There is no internal examination involved.
