Private Ultrasound Scan Cost: The Short Answer

At Sonoworld, private ultrasound scans cost from £235 for a single diagnostic scan and from £500 for a screening package. Every price is all-inclusive — it covers the consultation, the scan, verbal results during your appointment, and a written report within 24 hours. There are no add-on fees, no report charges, and no surprises.

The market-wide range for private ultrasound in London in 2026 is approximately £60–£500 for a single scan, depending on scan type, clinic, and what is included in the quoted price. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive options is not always a reflection of clinical quality — it often reflects what is and is not included in the fee.

This guide explains what drives the cost of a private ultrasound, what Sonoworld's all-inclusive price covers, and what to check when comparing clinics.

What Is Included in the Price?

Every Sonoworld price is all-inclusive. There are no separate charges for the consultation, the report, or the verbal explanation during the scan.

What Is Included Sonoworld Some Other Clinics
Clinical consultation (history-taking) ✓ Included Sometimes charged separately
The scan itself ✓ Included ✓ Included
Verbal results during appointment ✓ Included Not always provided
Written report ✓ Within 24 hours Sometimes charged separately or delayed
Images ✓ Included Sometimes charged separately
Follow-up advice ✓ Included Varies
Why all-inclusive pricing matters: A clinic advertising a scan at £80 may charge separately for the report (£40–£80), the consultation (£50–£100), and images (£15–£30). The total cost can exceed £200 — more than a clinic that quotes £235 all-inclusive. Always ask what is included before booking.

What Drives the Cost of a Private Ultrasound?

Clinician Level

The most significant cost driver is the seniority of the clinician performing the scan. A consultant-level practitioner — with specialist training in diagnostic ultrasound and extensive clinical experience — costs more than a radiographer or sonographer working at a lower grade. At Sonoworld, all scans are performed by consultant-level practitioners. This is not a marketing claim; it is a clinical standard that affects the accuracy of the findings and the quality of the verbal explanation you receive.

Scan Complexity and Duration

A single-organ scan (for example, a thyroid scan or a testicular scan) takes 20–30 minutes. A combined scan (abdominal and pelvic) or a specialist scan (echocardiogram, full-body screening) takes 45–90 minutes. Longer, more complex scans cost more — which is why combined scans are priced at £350 and full-body packages at £784–£785.

Equipment

High-resolution diagnostic equipment — particularly for vascular and cardiac imaging — is significantly more expensive to purchase and maintain than basic ultrasound machines. Clinics using premium equipment pass some of this cost into their pricing. The practical difference for patients is image quality and diagnostic accuracy.

Location

Central London clinic costs are higher than suburban or out-of-London clinics, reflecting property and operational costs. Sonoworld is located at 29 Weymouth Street, Marylebone — central London, accessible from multiple tube lines. The location premium is offset by the convenience of same-day appointments without travelling far from central London.

What Is Included

As noted above, the most important factor when comparing prices is what is included. An all-inclusive price of £235 is often better value than a headline price of £80 with a report, consultation, and images charged separately.

From Our Practice

A pattern we see regularly is patients who have previously booked a scan at a clinic advertising a very low price — sometimes £60–£80 — and arrived to find the appointment lasted 10 minutes, no verbal explanation was given, and the report arrived a week later addressed to a GP they had not seen. The total cost, once the report and images were charged separately, was not significantly lower than our all-inclusive fee.

The 10-minute scan is the more significant issue. A thorough abdominal scan — assessing the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and both kidneys — takes a minimum of 20–25 minutes when performed properly. A scan completed in 10 minutes is either incomplete or has been performed so quickly that subtle findings may be missed. The written report from a 10-minute scan reflects what was seen in 10 minutes.

Our pricing reflects the time taken to do the scan properly, the seniority of the practitioner, and the verbal explanation that forms part of every appointment. Patients who have had both experiences consistently describe the difference as significant — not in terms of the technology, but in terms of what they left the appointment knowing.

Observations above are drawn from composite patterns across our patient population, not from any individual case. They are intended to illustrate typical clinical scenarios, not to provide advice about specific clinics or providers.

Private Medical Insurance

Sonoworld accepts referrals from several private medical insurers, including AXA Health, Healix, and WPA. If you have private medical insurance, contact your insurer before booking to confirm coverage and obtain an authorisation number. Present this at the time of booking.

Not all insurers cover self-referred diagnostic scans — some require a GP or specialist referral to trigger coverage. Check your policy terms before booking. For scans not covered by your insurer, our all-inclusive self-pay prices apply.

Cost FAQs

How much does a private ultrasound scan cost in London?

At Sonoworld, private ultrasound scans cost from £235 for a single diagnostic scan, all-inclusive. Screening packages start from £500. The market-wide range in London in 2026 is approximately £60–£500 depending on scan type, clinic, and what is included in the quoted price. Always confirm what is included before booking.

What is included in the price of a private ultrasound scan at Sonoworld?

Every Sonoworld price includes the clinical consultation, the scan, verbal results during your appointment, and a written report within 24 hours. There are no separate charges for the report, images, or follow-up advice.

Do you accept private medical insurance?

Yes — Sonoworld accepts referrals from AXA Health, Healix, and WPA. Contact your insurer before booking to confirm coverage and obtain an authorisation number. Not all insurers cover self-referred scans; check your policy terms. Always seek individual advice from your insurer about your specific policy.

Why do bilateral scans cost more than single scans?

Bilateral scans assess both sides — for example, both shoulders or both knees. They take approximately twice as long as a single-side scan and require the practitioner to assess and report on two separate anatomical areas. The price for bilateral scans at Sonoworld is £350, compared to £235 for a single side.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Same-day and next-day appointments are available at Sonoworld. You can book online at any time or call us on 020 3633 4902 during clinic hours. No GP referral is required for most scans.

How long does it take to receive my written report?

Your written report is sent to you within 24 hours of your appointment. You receive verbal results during the scan itself, so you leave the clinic already knowing what was found. The written report is sent directly to you — not to your GP — and you choose whether to share it with other clinicians.
